Racheal Kneller - Best Turned Out

As Shirley Teasdale referred to her in my previous interview, 'Racheal Kneller is definitely the best turned out'. She has also been kind enough to talk to me about her career and answer some questions.

Racheal grew up in Wolverhampton and like Shirley has been in the game for a while now. She has also been very successful for a young jockey beginning to find her feet, as rides in the early part of her career were hard to come by. She has ridden out her 7 pound claim already since becoming an Apprentice in 2011 and is still winning as a 5 pound claimer. Despite only taking out her apprentice licence in 2011 she has been riding since 2007 but with a lot less rides, as you can imagine. Although not quite getting through to ride in the top ranks races yet, she has consistently shown her worth, Both on Turf and the All Weather.

Many jockeys riding nowadays will have grown up around horses with the small exception, Kneller is not part of that exception. She claims to have grown up 'virtually sitting on horses' but fully came into the game quite late for a jockey. As a young girl she was always around horses, especially show jumping which led her to compete in many horse of the year show qualifiers. Racing was always her passion though and Racheal's dreams were fairly clear as to what she wanted to do.

She took full advantage of A-level study leave, not for studying though, instead she got a job at Reg Hollinshead's yard as a stable girl. She did pretty much everything behind the scenes at the yard from mucking out to leading up a horse at the races. She then took her amateur licence out for the yard and rode as an amateur for 4 years riding 15 winners during that time.

Her first ride for Reg Hollinshead came aboard the at the time 10 year old gelding Super Dominion at 66/1 round Wolverhampton, in what was to be his last appearance on a racecourse. The second most unfancied runner in the field of 11 was prominent until losing his position at the half way marker. Despite that Racheal managed to get her mount to stay on again late on in the day and grab a staying on 5th, but never looked like troubling the leaders. She was 20 years of age when she had her first ride and since then has never looked back from race riding going on to more success.

After her 4 years with Reg Hollinshead, she moved onto her current stable of Mark Usher to take a step forward as an apprentice for the yard. A move which she regrets not doing earlier as she has now ridden 32 winners in the past two years. Already in this calendar year with the flat season just getting up and running, Kneller has ridden 4 winners and is well on the way to breaking her personal record of wins for the year.

Not just a talented jockey, Racheal has taken it upon herself to write a few blogs and promote females in the sport for 'Racing4Girls'. This is a website and twitter page made up by Stephanie King, a representative for BetVictor, to help racing fans familiarise themselves with female jockeys and trainers. It is also a chance for younger bloggers and eager writers to get involved and develop their skills in writing about racing. Just through visiting the site you can be taken from a racing novice to someone who wouldn't be out of place at the racecourse. Kneller joins fellow jockey Kirsty Milczarek and assistant trainer Katie Margarson, all writing articles for the site in their own spare time. You can give the website a visit by going to http://www.bettingbeauty.com/ where you can also read Racheal's blog.

So what is next for Racheal Kneller? It may sound a bit old fashioned and the same for everyone in the business, but a bit of elbow grease will get you far. There is no doubting that she is headed in the right direction for her career and is one of many in the strong surge of female jockeys currently. This headed by Lucy Alexander who just won the Conditional Jockeys title for National Hunt in the past week beating off Brendan Powell. There is no reason Racheal cant be one of the more sought after jockeys in the game in the coming seasons, especially with an invaluable 5 pound claim. But I wish her the best of luck with the coming season and especially to the Mark Usher stable, may the winners flow like the Champagne on a Saturday night... Right Racheal? Ahem.

Id like to end today by saying thank you to the beautiful Racheal Kneller for taking the time to talk to me when I'm sure she has better things to do. You can keep up to date with Racheal on twitter @Rachealkneller alternatively you can follow me on @Lukeyboy1325. Again another jockey with a more suitable twitter name than me! Also you can follow Mark Usher on his personal account, he is one of the most honest trainers out there and regularly posts his thoughts on his runners. You can find him on @MarkUsherRacing and he is well worth following.

Thank you again to Racheal Kneller, I leave you with an interview I recently conducted with her, cue some humorous answers.

Celebration Day

This week the world of racing was turned on it's head, in particular flat racing. Mahmood Al Zarooni was banned from British Racing for 8 years, this means he cannot even set foot on a British racecourse during that time. The BHA board found him guilty of drug abuse in some of his string of horses including leading 1000 Guineas hope Certify and Opinion Poll. Nothing has been said yet as to what will happen to his horses and what trainer they will go to but one thing is for certain, the past week has been a dark one for racing.

I'm sure you have all heard enough of that story this week so we will quickly recap last week when only one winner graced us. That winner came in the form of Maureen for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes thus staking her claims for the 1000 Guineas next week. Fentara also placed for us at 8/1 but in honesty there was nothing to write home about except for our NAP winning. This week promises to be a better one however.

Today at Sandown has always been my favourite raceday of the year with a fantastic mix of top class jumps racing and top class flat racing. Last year Sanctuaire jumped his rivals silly with a dazzling display in the Celebration Chase, this year he bids to do the same. However ex Champion Chaser Finian's Rainbow opposes seeking to refind his form after 3 very below par outings this year. Also on the card is the long waited for Bet365 Gold Cup won last year by Tidal Bay completing a Double for Paul Nicholls' yard. There doesn't seem to be a horse of Tidal Bay's class this year but nonetheless is a very competitive renewal.

On that note we begin this week's selections.

1:30 Sandown - Counsel

Donald McCain's yard were badly out of form when Counsel ran so badly in the Fred Winter and that run can be easily forgotten about. Since then he has come out and won by 40 lengths at Sedgefield in a very easy race, but he still looked to have a lot of class about him. He went from the front that day and was given a pretty easy lead but is unlikely to get that today, however that isn't a necessity. Before then he was a ready winner at Bangor when winning nicely in a good novice hurdle before beaten at Doncaster. He was an eyecatcher that day and wasn't beaten far by Triumph Hurdle 3rd Sametegal. Handicaps definitely look his thing and the one time useful flat horse can add a big win to his name over jumps. It is also worth noting that Lexi's Boy won this race for connections last year. (6/1)

2:10 Leicester - Santo Prince

Santo Prince is by the top class Henrythenavigator and was also a selection on this blog last time out when down the field at Yarmouth. He was 8th that day but in truth he could have been closer than the 8 lengths he was beaten and he very much needed the outing. Hayley Turner rode that day and the whip never changed position in her hand and it definitely wasn't an effort of a fully wound up horse. There is no doubt that he will improve for that run and should be much closer from a pound lower in the ratings. One last thing to mention is that Hayley Turner comes to Leicester for one ride before going to Doncaster for this evening's action. Very strongly fancied and way too big of a price. (12/1)

2:40 Sandown - Sanctuaire & Sire De Grugy

Sanctuaire hasn't been hard pressed this year but has run some useful races including a win at Kempton in a Grade 2. This race has been branded as 'his Gold Cup' for the year by trainer Paul Nicholls after winning in emphatic style last season. A repeat of that form will see him go in again here but he will need to step up on his form a little, but I have no doubt he will do just that. Personally I hope they ping him out in front and let him dominate like last year, but they have only tried that once this year and holding him up is no good. The very Headstrong Sanctuaire can land this for the second year running. (7/2) Also worth a mention is Sire De Grugy for the Gary Moore yard who was once a good handicap hurdler and has looked a class chaser. He got himself injured over the winter and came back at Aintree when he needed it fairly badly, it was still a promising run however. Since then he has hacked up in a very poor race at Stratford as he should have. Unfortunately Pricewise has got him but still could be each way value and one to be with Sanctuaire in a reverse forecast. (7/1)

3:50 Sandown - Duke Of Lucca

As always a tough race to pick the winner of, Hadrian's Approach is a horse I very much like but his jumping shouldn't be good enough to win here. Philip Hobbs saddles two here and we go for what seems his second string with the Consisten Duke Of Lucca for Tom O'Brien. He has shown he can be competitive off this mark with a third in the Racing Plus Chase before a distant 6th at Aintree behind Battle Group. He was a high class hurdler that quickly turned his attention to chasing instantly taking to it and he has been consistent ever since. This extreme test of stamina will be right up his street and as long as he jumps well should take some beating at a healthy price. (20/1)

Also worth noting that if Dovers Hill is fit, he has his ground this year and can go well after last years exertions.

5:30 Sandown - Poetic Lord

The ex Richard Hannon inmate is one that I have followed for sometime repaying that faith with a few places from time to time. But this season since being gelded has been a lot better for Sylvester Kirk and Ryan Moore including a win 2 days ago at Lingfield but will be very ready today. He will enjoy the return to turf over a mile and a course like Sandown will utilise his stamina reserves. Dane O'Neill takes the ride today and despite the six pound penalty he can go in again and remain a horse on an upward curve. (8/1)

NAP - Counsel
Nb - Sanctuaire

If you have a bet today then good luck, if not then I'm sure you will enjoy the racing nonetheless, so sit back and enjoy the viewing today.

Happy Punting Guys!

Scottish Grand National Day

What a crazy week in the world it has been, amongst fertilizer plants blowing up and other shootings, Monday saw two bombs set off at the Boston Marathon. How anyone could think to do something so destructive and plain evil is beyond me, but thankfully in the past hour they have caught the last suspect. Its a crazy world we live in but we must raise our caps to the Boston Police Department for their efficiency of the matter and professionalism. Another word of admiration for the people of Boston and the surrounding areas. Watching the NHL game earlier in the week between Buffalo and Boston, you couldn't help but feel touched by the pride in which they sang the National Anthem.

Last week was a blank for us with all selections running oh so poorly, but I'm optimistic that this week will be better with a few strong fancies. One man will be missing from the action today and indeed at Punchestown next week. That man is AP McCoy after a fall at Cheltenham earlier in the week in which he has broken a few ribs, I'm sure he would ride if he'd be allowed, but thankfully the doctors are telling him to rest and get back to full health.

Only a short intro this week as we will be cracking on with the main part now, also its late and I want my dinner...

1:50 Newbury - Model Pupil

Model Pupil looks to be a top class stayer in the making and confirmed that thought with a fantastic win at Doncaster by as far as you like. He takes a step up in class today however and has to face Frankel's brother Noble Mission who himself is a very classy animal. Charlie Hills colt has race fitness on his side and in a race like this it could be vital despite being much more inexperienced. Since his first run he has improved with every outing, if he improves again from last time he should take some beating, even with a strong field against him. Ryan Moore rides again and he looks set to land the first bet of the day for us. (3/1)

2:40 Ayr - Une Artiste

Nicky Henderson drops Une Artiste back in trip to the minimum today after a very poor display in the mares hurdle at Cheltenham. Many say that she simply wasn't good enough that day and was outclassed, but believe it or not there were a few Henderson horses that under achieved at the Festival. Before then she had beaten Alasi nicely at Wetherby and gave Kentford Grey Lady a beating at Sandown. That form wouldn't suggest she really needs two miles but her Wetherby win was over the distance and she can definitely handle it. Simon Munir took this last year with his Raya Star and can own the winner here again for Barry Geraghty and Nicky Henderson. (8/1)

2:55 Newbury - Maureen

Maureen has been beaten twice in her short career so far, both at HQ and both times she had a horrible passage rendering her unlucky. The first time she would have definitely won, but last time out it is harder to say as she was ninth but not too far behind Rosdhu Queen. I watched her debut at this track and she won in the manner of a very good filly before her second at Newmarket. She then won easily at Ascot before once again being unlucky at Newmarket and is forgiven easily for that run. For me she could turn out to be the class horse in the race and is a live 1000 Guineas hope despite strong opposition from Rosdhu Queen. (7/2)

3:30 Newbury - Moohaajim

Marco Botti has had his string in fine form for the early part of this year and runs one of his stable stars here today. Moohaajim has only ever been beaten by Reckless Abandon and last time looked to be crying out for the longer trip after just being denied. This came after a nice win at Newbury in which he beat a useful Richard Hannon horse in Master Of War. Realistically today he only has one horse to beat in the odds on Favourite Olympic Glory who was very good last year. But Richard Hughes has said he will come on for the run, not something you wish to hear about an odds on favourite. Preference is for Moohaajim this afternoon. (6/4)

3:50 Ayr - Lion Na Bearnai

Just the one outing this season for the Irish National winner of 2012 which came in the Hennessy at Newbury. The fact of the matter is that he wasn't fast enough for the race that day and ran well until classier horses got away from him and he pulled up. There is no disgrace in losing to Bobs Worth, Tidal Bay and First Lieutenant though is there! Today is also a much easier race. He is lowered a pound in the handicap and over the longer trip he can make it count on his trip over from Ireland. Lion Na Bearnai is only from a very small yard with a handful of horses in, they wouldn't bring him over for the day out. A live outsider and can ruffle a few feathers today in his preferred ground and a distance sure to suit. (50/1)

5:00 Ayr  - Fentara

Connections really fancied Fentara for a mares race at Newbury last time, the meeting was however abandoned so they have to re-route here today. She broke her maiden chase tag on her fourth attempt at Kelso when an odds on favourite, prior to that she had run some really good races. On debut she wasn't beaten too far by the classy Aland Islands at Newcastle and followed up with a second, again at Newcastle. The second time she can be considered a tad unfortunate after being badly hampered late on and still making it to within 2 lengths of the winner. She then fell when favourite in a good race at Catterick but was probably beat at the time when coming down at the last. Her strongest form however comes when third to Goulanes and Super Duty and would have been closer were it not for a mistake at the last. One last note is that she comes here fresh when a few other fancied rivals ran at Cheltenham and may have gone over the top. (8/1)

NAP - Maureen
Nb - Model Pupil

Good luck this week guys, the interview with Racheal Kneller will be up early next week and then I will be lining up my next interview and article.

Happy Punting!

Return of the flat season... Again

At last it is the weekend and the return of some high class racing to our screens! Focus for today is well and truly on Doncaster with a card that feels like it is reopening the flat season after the lack of action. But its here and the National hunt season is all but over despite entertaining supporting cards at Stratford and Uttoxeter. We also race at Kempton who host the Snowdrop Stakes for fillies with Irish Jumps racing from Tramore. No Ruby Walsh there though as he is in Japan to ride Blackstairmountain in the Nakayama Grand Jump.

Hopefully you all read my interview and article blog with Shirley Teasdale earlier in the week, more importantly, you enjoyed it. This is something I really enjoy doing as it involves getting everyone closer with the people who make this sport so great. I am already writing my next interview and all the work has been done, this time it will be focused on Mark Usher's jockey Racheal Kneller who provides some... Comical answers. Providing all that goes well the next person I am lining up is very exciting as I have been a big fan of her's for some time now. But lets not count our chickens and get today out of the way first.

Id also like to thank you all for the support you gave this page during Grand National week and the continued support in the coming days. Last week was the most views this blog has ever received and I cant thank you all enough for that, I just hope you had a better Aintree than we did here! Congratulations to Sue and Harvey Smith and also Ryan Mania who is a very underrated jockey. Long time followers of me will know I'm a huge fan of the stable and there aren't many people in the game that deserve this more.

One final thing before we start today, if you have a twitter account please go and follow @NewBHorses. They are a great cause in aiming to rehome and rehabilitate retired racehorses and no I wasn't asked to say anything about them. Alternatively you can visit their website which is www.newbeginningshorses.org.uk where you can see pictures of their horses currently. Ex-festival winner Mister McGoldrick is the pride and joy there amongst many others. Thank You

But back to current racehorses and onto the action this week.

1:35 Kempton - Vodka Time

David Evans yard have been on absolute fire as of late and his 2 year olds are going as well as any early season. Vodka Time was runner up in the Brocklesby, five lengths behind Mick's Yer Man which links him and Skye's the limit closely together. Preference is for Vodka Time though who travelled the best for much of the race first time out but couldn't quicken in the conditions. The fibresand will suit him much more today and this is arguably an easier race however the Richard Hannon newcomer is a danger. But with the yard on absolute fire and the horse having a run under his belt we will side with Vodka Time in the opener. (3/1)

2:20 Doncaster - Highland Knight

Highland Knight is a horse that I very much like and at the age of 6 is probably better than he has ever been right now. Clearly this is a race with a lot of depth despite the small field, but the selection improved all throughout last year with a group win in Germany to his name. His excuse for his latest run would be the ground in the sense that he doesn't want it too soft, no such excuses today however on this ground. This time last year he was rated 96 and this time round is 19 pounds higher at 115 after a string of good performances. Normal jockey David Probert is sidelined with a ban but the very talented Liam Keniry takes over the steering. Highland Knight to burn them all off from the front. (10/3)

3:15 Kempton - Burke's Rock

Burke's Rock is one of a few Jeremy Noseda horses I am fond of after her exploits last year at the top level. At one point she was a live candidate for the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot until turning in a woeful run at Redcar. But she got right back on the horse (excuse the pun) and pushed the useful Jacob Cats all the way at Sandown after leading the race. After another second and then refinding the winning thread, she put in two more below par performances before dropped back down to a mile, and finishing second to the top class Sentaril by a head. Through her races it may look as if she needs further but I think its a case of her just getting a mile very well instead of too short a distance. William Buick takes the ride and he exudes confidence on his Attheraces blog which is good enough for me. Burke's Rock to take the Snowdrop. (7/1)

3:20 Uttoxeter - Ciceron

Venetia Williams string continued its pretty good form yesterday at Chepstow and it seems she has been in form all season long. Ciceron is one of those providing towards the good form with a string of places and a win thrown in for good measure. It may look like he ran 9 days ago from today's racecard but if you recall he fell at the first during Aintree so comes here fresh. In truth he never looked likely to make it over the obstacle as he was behind a few that ran around right in front of him. Usually he is a very sound jumper so we can forgive him that blip and he has his sights lowered considerably today, Robbie Dunne's 3 pound claim could well come in handy also. The return to faster ground will help and Ciceron is taken to add to his tally for this season. (9/2)

3:30 Doncaster - Colonel Mak

David Barron's seemingly second string comes here fit after a recent run at the course 2 weeks ago on Lincoln day. He was behind a few of today's opponents that time and most people would argue he wont be reversing that. However he impressed me that day, early on he was one of the lead horses making the pace and showed some great early speed to get there. He weakened late on but will have needed the run and it didn't help that the race was run on ground that he really doesn't like all that much. He returns here off his lowest mark for 2 years but has run well off much higher and more importantly on good ground. Clearly a tough race but one that can go the way of Colonel Mak at a working man's price. (25/1)

4:15 Stratford - Iolith

Our last runner of the day comes from Stratford in the shape of the in form Alan King's Iolith. He ran an absolute blinder on return after a monster lay off of almost 2 years. He was fourth on reappearance and for a while looked the winner but fitness gave out on stamina sapping ground and he tired late on. Before his injury however he was a very promising novice hurdler, gaining a rating of 130 during the season. The return to good ground will see him much happier today and with fitness on his side should take some beating, Claret Cloak is a danger however. Wayne Hutchinson has drummed up a good relationship with Iolith in the past and they can continue their romance today with a win. (5/1)

NAP - Highland Knight
Nb - Vodka Time

Lucky 15 - Vodka Time, Highland Knight, Burke's Rock and Iolith

Good luck and happy punting as always guys!

Shirley Teasdale Interview

Shirley Teasdale is already making a bit of a name for herself in the Northern tracks of England, both on fibresand and on the turf. Just like many others in the sport she is pushing to enhance the strength of females taking part in the sport, just like Siobhan Miller in my previous interview. Not yet at the heights of fellow female weighing room colleagues Hayley Turner and Kirsty Milczarek, but well on her way already riding out her 7 pound claim. She has also answered any critics left in the sport by proving her worth against the boys time and time again, leaving no room for doubt about her riding abilities.

Teasdale began her love of horses at a young age when only 10 years old and described herself to having a 'need for speed'. What better dream to have than to become a jockey, which she was firmly set on becoming even at such a young age. She began to help out and ride at Barry Murtagh's yard situated in Cumbria near her hometown of Carlisle when she was 14 to until she left school. After leaving school she went to work for Nicky Richards, this is where things began to pick up for Shirley in a big way.

In order to pursue her dreams of becoming a jockey she moved to Noel Wilson's yard, known for such horses as Latalomne and Stallone, where she would become his apprentice. Along with that move came her first ride at Ayr aboard the 4 year old Gelding, Red Skipper in a Mile long Apprentice Handicap. She was handy the whole way and up just behind the pace, but couldn't quicken when push came to shove and settled for a more than respectable fourth aboard the 14/1 shot. She would go on to partner Red Skipper a further two times at Newcastle and Musselburgh without success.

After she had finished at Wilson's yard she moved on to the powerful yard of Dandy Nicholls, renowned for his sprinters. At the age of just 19 she rode her first winner at her local track of Carlisle for him, aboard the lightly race three year old, One Pursuit with two wins to his name. Like her first ride she was handy the whole way and travelled best for much of the race under a calm yet inevitably excited Shirley Teasdale. One Pursuit looked the winner for much of the straight and even more so when switching to outside of the leader Sea The Storm 2 furlongs out. but it wasn't until the furlong marker till her urgings carried One Pursuit to the front and quickly scampered clear from the chasing Madison Square. The final winning distance was 4 lengths and this cued the start of Shirley Teasdale's uprise.

Watch her first winning ride on the link below.

http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/results/24-07-2011/carlisle/result/448247/paije-richardson-live-handicap/video?token=edd682573f

Since that day in 2011 she has started picking up rides from a variety of trainers, most recently from Alan McCabe at Wolverhampton on Saturday night riding Sextons House. As mentioned before she has ridden out her seven pound claim, and there is only a matter of time until she rides out her five pound claim. Like many young jockeys the coming flat season will be a big one, but for Shirley it will be especially important as more rides start coming in and winners mount up.

The future looks bright for Miss Teasdale and that is helped by the fact that she is popular amongst fellow jockeys in the weighing room. Since 2009 her smile and laugh have been lighting up tracks across northern England, but personally I hope we get to see her in action more frequently on the southern based courses along her career. You can next catch her in action aboard Medam at Southwell on Tuesday afternoon and we wish her the best of luck with the ride.

Racing has itself another driving force in the female ranks with Shirley and I'm sure she is a jockey we will be seeing more of very soon. Id like to take this chance to thank the lovely and bubbly Shirley Teasdale for taking the time to talk to me about herself, you can follow her on her personal twitter account @ShirleyTeasdal1. Alternatively you can follow me on twitter where I update this blog every week and whenever I can on @Lukeyboy1325. I think its clear who has the more sensible twitter name!

Courtesy Is worth the Ascot Risk

2:15 Ascot - Courtesy Call

Nicky Henderson had a fantastic week 3 days at Aintree and his retained jockey Barry Geraghty earned the status of Champion Jockey for the meeting. They team up with a few runners today and the first of those is Courtesy Call who has only his second start over hurdles today. Trained by Mark Johnston on the level he earned a rating of 86 before moving to Seven Barrows and switching disciplines. He was considered good enough to contest the Adonis Hurdle last time at Kempton on debut, a race which was won by the useful Irish Saint. Vasco Du Ronceray and L'unique were both ahead of him that day both franking the form since, the latter more so on Thursday. Fosters Road was a place behind him and has since won two races at Wolverhampton on the fibresand as well. The form looks rock solid in the race and this is a much easier race this afternoon and he can land the opener. No Price Yet

Village Vic is the favourite on Betfair and will probably go off favourite but I think the biggest danger will come in the form of Via Sundown from the Moore yard. He was in need of the run last time which was also his first outing since coming over from France, plenty of potential and one at a price but a big danger.

2:50 Ascot - Molotof

To start the year if you would of asked me whether Molotof would take to fences the answer would have been a resounding no. However I would have been wrong in a big fashion after he has contested novice races of the highest level and tried his hand at Cheltenham last month. He was never really looking like the winner that day and finished 30 lengths behind Benefficient in the Jewson. Today is a much easier race for him and as long as the long season hasn't had an affect on him he should be adding another prize to is resume. The only losses he has suffered is when tried at a higher level and the ones he has lost to have been consistent all season. Shouldn't be beaten here. (4/5)

3:25 Ascot - Calculated Risk

We leave the Henderson string and switch over to another Aintree winning trainer now with John Quinn's yard. He ran a fantastic race at Sandown on ground he would have hated to win, overcoming a blunder at two from home on the way. Like Courtesy Call he came from the flat, but was only rated a lowly 67, since going hurdling he has been a revelation and much improved. He opened up by taking a few notable scalps at Doncaster when unfancied by price, he had the useful juvenile Handazan in behind him. More importantly he gave the reopposing Little Dutch Girl 6 pounds and handed out a 7 length beating to her, Aazif and Last Shadow were the other two in touch. He then bombed at Huntingdon before two runs on ground he dislikes, after his Sandown win the plan was to go to Cheltenham. They ended bypassing the Festival due to softer ground and comes here a fresher horse and therefore a much more dangerous horse. With the form of his latest win stacking up nicely he can land the third race on the card and provide John Quinn with another winner. (6/1)

4:00 Ascot - Conquisto

Steve Gollings has had a lot of fun this season with Conquisto recording three wins two seconds and a third to date. He won on softer ground before being beaten by Overturn which is no bad feat. Kruzhlinin of Donald McCain's yard handed out a 8 length defeat to him before Conquisto was upped in trip behind Overturn as mentioned previously. Testing ground isn't really his strong area and despite an easier race last time at Southwell he bolted in on good ground. That would have boosted his confidence and Tom Scudamore who rode that day is 2 from 2 aboard him, he keeps the ride today and gets on well with him. One or two in the field have questions to answer for me, Tetlami tends to make a horrendous mistake each time and fell in the Grand Annual. Kapga De Cerisy is a much better horse in very small fields and could not feature at the Festival behind stablemate Carrickboy. Conquisto to land the prize. (7/1)

4:40 Ascot - Fruity O'Rooney

I cant really say anything about Fruity O'Rooney other than he wears his heart on his sleeve every time and never goes down without a fight. He gets pretty much any distance you ask of him, coming fifth over 4 miles in the Scottish National while also a winner over 2 and a half miles. We know what tactics he will use under Jamie Moore, he will ping off out in front and say catch me if you can, even when they do he will come back for more. The good ground is no worry to him at all and despite only being small absolute flies over the fences which are nearly as big as him. After his fifth at Cheltenham the handicapper has been a bit more lenient with him and dropped him two pounds down to 137. One last thing is that the cheek pieces are off today and he sports a Visor first time, if that sparks him up even more he will be very hard to catch. Fruity O'Rooney to lead them a merry dance this afternoon. (6/1)

NAP - Fruity O'Rooney
Nb - Calculated Risk

Happy punting today guys, one final thing is that going back right handed Creevytenant should go well in the hunter chase at Ascot. He jumped horrifically right hand at every fence at Cheltenham and was pulled up as a result.

Have a nice day!

Friday 5 April 2013

Grand National Day

Well day two was horrible for the blog as well, we went from 4 fallers on the first day to having two non runners yesterday. The runners we did have weren't much good either with My Tent Or Yours hosing up in the first, however his jumping left something to be desired. The same could be said for Sprinter Sacre who couldn't have won easier, however compared to his usual slick self, he was a little lack lustre. Saying that both have absolutely huge engines and the writing was on the wall from a long way out. Flemenstar disappointed me a little, but for the first time in his career he looked a genuine three miler as we saw him staying on at the end very takingly. He was still quite distant from Cue Card in second but his jumping was awesome and often he took off from outside the wings clearing the fence with ease.

I grew up in a racing family, my parents were always in love with racing, in fact they met at Cheltenham during festival week. It's fair to say that I didn't have much choice whether I liked racing or not, as if I would change that if I could! But I had been surrounded by stories of triumph and some of losses, but the stories that stick with me were the favourites that had been fatally injured on course. My Mum had always told me stories of horses that upset her when they passed away but I never understood the emotion of it. Yesterday I felt that feeling for the first time in my racing life.

I understand many non racing people will be reading this today and may not understand what I am about to say, but all racing fans will be able to relate with this. Along with many others real racing fans Little Josh was one of my all time favourites with his devastating front running and bold jumping performances. His gorgeous white face often lead the way in many handicaps round Cheltenham, most memorably when winning the Paddypower. He also jumped his rivals silly on this very course when winning the Grand Sefton in heroic style on very tiring ground. It was rare that he ever missed a beat in any of his races, for that he earned his way into the hearts of every spectator that witnessed him race. In the Topham over the National Fences yesterday, Little Josh took a fall surrounded by a few other horses, it took a while for him to refind his feet after his tumble. When he did rise he tried running off with the rest of the field, but something wasn't right, he was running in a different manner than he should be. It soon became clear that Little Josh had broken his shoulder in the fall which meant the worst for such a Beautiful creature. I usually hold myself as a fairly emotionally strong 20 year old, but I would be lying to you if I said I didn't shed a tear to see him in this state. Along with many others I watched the race unfold ahead and even though having a bet on Walkon who came second, really didn't feel like cheering him on. The only saving grace from this tragic incident is that after a bit of treatment Sam Twiston-Davies rose from the turf shaken but nothing more. One last thing before I say my final goodbye to Little Josh is a thank you, to Ruby Walsh whom was bought down aboard There's No Panic during the fall. He got up from the turf straight away and saw an injured Little Josh trying to run off, without a moments doubt he took off after the horse. Whether it was himself or ground staff that caught him I'm not sure as the camera moved on from the fence, but they prevented him from being in any more pain. On Thursday we said our final goodbye's to Fair Along, today we say goodbye to Little Josh. So once more I ask you all to join me and say farewell to a well loved racehorse, R.I.P Little Josh, you will never be forgotten.

Little Josh - 11/5/2002 - 06/04/2013

But from that sad note we must go on with the days racing and begin Grand National day.

1:45 - Mersey Novices Hurdle - Eduard

Nicky Richards has had two very good novice hurdlers this year, Duke Of Navan and Eduard, the former hasn't made it to Aintree. But the selection today tackles a trip that will definitely be in his favour and is something he has been crying out for all season. He also gets good ground which he doesn't need but is much more effective on after his bumper form and first two hurdles. He has two very smart pieces of form, the first is second to Ifandbutwhynot on his hurdling debut, the winner has gone on to compete at a much higher level. The second bit of form is from his last race in which he was just held when staying on late behind Mwaleshi who is much improved this year. Those efforts have earned him a rating of 140 and is only one pound off the top rated horse in the race, Up and Go. With the step up in trip sure to suit and ground also to his liking Eduard can land the opener. (11/2)

Eduard (Near Side) Battles Ifandbutwhynot (Far Side)

2:15 - Maghull Novices Chase - Sire De Grugy

Gary Moore doesn't have many runners at the highest level but Sire De Grugy is certainly one with plenty of class about him. He has been off since November but comes here a fresh horse against main rivals that had hard races last time out at Cheltenham. He also brings arguably the best form to the table from his second start over fences and also his only defeat over fences. That day he ran into Captain Conan who beat him but not too easily, the margin between them was 2 lengths that day. Of course Captain Conan has gone on to be a very high class novice since then and franked the form repeatedly, even Third Intention back in third has been high class. The ground is pretty much perfect for him today and he can provide a big winner for Gary and Jamie Moore. (7/1)

Sire De Grugy winning his chase debut at Kempton

2:40 - Liverpool Hurdle -African Gold

Team Twiston-Davies can land a winner here after their tragic day yesterday with the improving novice African Gold. Certainly the least exposed runner in the field he was beaten for only the second time in his career at Cheltenham when behind At Fishers Cross who is top class himself. The faster ground will pose no threats to him today and still remains a nice prospect despite tasting defeat last time. There isn't a lot more to say about him other than he is consistent, will like the ground and represents a big stable. Could well be underrated amongst his elders. (9/1)

African Gold (Near Side) takes on his elders for the first time today

3:25 - John Smith's Handicap Chase - Planet Of Sound

Philip Hobbs' yard have been going along quite nicely this week and Planet Of Sound is one that is beginning to look well handicapped on his old form. He hasn't won since 2010 when winning the Grade 1 Punchestown Gold Cup, take note that injury kept him out for a while though. At his peak he was rated 166 and is now down to a mark of 147 which is extremely workable, especially on this ground. On good ground he has been posting good performances, it is his softer ground runs that are lowering his mark which is great for today. Until the second last in last year's National he was up in the field travelling well, until stamina gave out and he tailed off to finish 12th. If returning to anywhere near his best he will take a lot of beating today and stands a huge each way chance. (12/1)

Planet of Sound (In Lead) winning the Punchestown Gold Cup 2010

4:15 - John Smiths Grand National - Quiscover Fontaine (40/1)

http://lukeelder.blogspot.ca/2013/04/grand-national-runner-by-runner-analysis.html

5:10 - John Smiths Handicap Hurdle (Conditionals and Amateurs) - Cockney Sparrow

Cockney Sparrow was a useful horse on the flat earning a mark of 81 at her best when running for Peter Chapple-Hyam. Since going hurdling however she is 2 from four with both her losses ending with her as runner up. Her form was franked here in a big wayon Wednesday when L'unique won the 4 year old hurdle, she was 12 lengths behind L'unique here in December on hurdling debut. She has only encountered good ground once when hurdling, an outing which she won with ease at Doncaster last month. Off a very low weight today which is furthered by the 7 pound claim of Dean Pratt she is one to really take seriously today. (7/1)

Cockney Sparrow faces a step up in class today

5:45 - Champion Standard Open NH Flat Race - Quickpick Vic & Wilde Blue Yonder

Quickpick Vic entered my notebook when he won with ease last time at Naas on his fourth attempt. He represents the Tony Martin stable and is one of two horses bought over for this week (his stablemate Pires was unplaced) and is held in high regard. Last time was a bold front running display topped with a fantastic turn of foot, however it will be much harder to dominate today in the much bigger field. The second from that race has recently franked the form by winning but there is a doubt, that is the fact he has never run on anything better than soft and that is an unknown. He still remains one for the future and has a great chance today (10/1)

One for Alan King with the second time out Wilde Blue Yonder under Wayne Hutchinson. Usually that would mean he is playing second fiddle to a stronger stable mate but with Choc injured he gets the main ride. He will be looking to build on his debut effort when narrowly going down to Champion Bumper fifth Purple Bay from John Ferguson's yard. Those two were 9 lengths clear of the next horse and clearly have a bit of talent about them representing two powerful yards.  Id also like to wish my two friends I met at Cheltenham last week the best of luck with him as they own part shares in the horse. (10/1)

NAP - Eduard
Nb - Sire De Grugy

I wish everyone the best of luck today, whether you are following my tips or not today I hope you find a winner and have a profitable day.

Happy Punting Guys

Grand National Runner by Runner Analysis

1. Imperial Commander

2009 Ryanair winner and 2010 Gold Cup winner, this boy is full of class but an injury forced him to miss almost two years. He returned in January with a brilliant performance in the Argento to be chinned on the line by Cape Tribulation and if staying is a big danger. Regular jockey Paddy Brennan is banned so Sam Twiston-Davies comes in for the ride which is no negative in its own right. For me I will just be praying he gets round safely and he doesn't do any damage to himself as he may be a bit fragile after missing Cheltenham. 12 years old but retains plenty of enthusiasm and ability

2. What A Friend

Owned by Sir Alex Ferguson and trained by Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls, What A Friend has been tried at the highest level without quite being good enough. He is also a bit of an awkward ride but has plenty of ability but Gold Cup winning jockey Sam Thomas will have his hands full today. The marathon trip will suit him as staying is his forte but his only visit to the race resulted in him pulling up off a 1 pound higher mark in 2011. Place claims at best but could find like tough.

3. Weird Al

Another that is a bit short of top class but is also horribly out of form and has been since winning the Charlie Hall in 2011 and after coming 3rd in the Betfair Chase. It further doesn't help his case that the stable don't appear to be in the best of form right now and many of their runners are struggling. He was tailing off and struggling when falling four from home in this last year off a 3 pound higher mark but that shouldn't be enough of a turnaround. One last thing that he has a tendency to go over the top at the big meetings and burst a blood vessel, this has happened on more than one occasion with him. Place claims if getting his act together but that doesn't look likely.

4. Quel Esprit

From the Champion Irish trainer Willie Mullins he has had his jumping issues before but they appear to be ironed out now. Last time he was well beaten behind Sir Des Champs and even more importantly behind Joncol who reopposes today on worse terms. He is a former grade one winner but it wasn't a strong Grade 1 at all and he looks as if he will struggle today off the mark he has for himself. Paul Townend rides but it would be a surprise were he to trouble the judge.

5. Big Fella Thanks

Big Fella Thanks has ran over these fences four times and has completed on all four occasions so jumping shouldn't be an issue. The issue comes from the argument if he truly stays the trip and the answer is that he doesn't really, but the furlong shorter will help him. A win earlier on in the season at Wincanton wont help him today and he is on a career high mark. One to oppose but may give you something to cheer for and give you a run for your money.

6. Seabass

As I am writing this Seabass is just about favourite for the race and was third in the race last year after jumping the last fence in the lead. Katie Walsh rides again and looks to become the first woman to win the Grand National for her dad Ted Walsh who also saddles Colbert Station. He has trained the winner of the National before when son Ruby rode Papillon to victory in 2000, but off a 5 pound higher mark Seabass will have life tough. There is also the question of whether he stays and like Big Fella Thanks the answer is no, one for a place but will do well to win.

7. Roberto Goldback

Moved from Dessie Hughes' stable to Nicky Henderson at the start of this season and won easily first time up at Ascot before unseating at Newbury. Recent efforts have bought his rating back down to 4 pounds above his Ascot win but a better performance last time out is encouraging. Stable are keen on him but his jumping can sometimes be a little bit suspect which is a huge negative on this course. If he takes to the fences he could well be dangerous however. Never completed a race over 3 miles and a furlong which brings staying doubts into it, but the stable are in form and has a live each way chance.

8. Sunnyhillboy

Last years runner up when caught in the last few inches by Neptune Collonges, it was revealed after the race he has also sustained a tendon injury. He is now 10 pounds higher than last year and hasn't run over fences this year, was due to have a prep run in the Gold Cup but scoped dirty in the morning and didn't run. Last year he was a Cheltenham winner and coming into the race in much better form, but he arrives here fresh which is a positive. Richie Mclernon takes the ride again, he is about as cool a head you can have from the weighing room on your horse and knows the horse well. He stays well and jumps well enough which would hand him an each way chance but this is no easy task.

9. BallaBriggs

Winner of the race in 2011 when having Oscar Time behind him and also a Cheltenham Festival winner in 2010 in the Kim Muir. He was sixth in the race last year off an eight pound higher rating and is now only two pounds above his winning mark from 2011. Last time he ran a blinder at Kelso before tiring and it was possibly the perfect prep run for the race this year. He is 12 now and possibly a bit old in the tooth, saying that he clearly has plenty of spark left in him and it would be no surprise were he to reclaim his crown. Very bold jumper and a good chance.

10. Teaforthree

National Hunt Chase winner at Cheltenham last year over four miles beating Harry The Viking and second in the Welsh National this year. He is very stamina laden and the further the trip the better for him, the fences shouldn't pose a problem for him as he is a sound jumper. Not too many miles on the clock and off a career high mark of 151 holds some of the leading claims in the race. It would be no surprise to see morning support for him and could even go off favourite on ground he will enjoy. Huge chance.

11. Across The Bay

Very solid form this year and forgiving his Welsh National effort on very testing ground his form is some of the best on offer. Ran here in December on the Mildmay course and Jumped badly left which cost him the race in the end, tendency to not jump straight which he wont get away with here. Worries that he will probably need it a little bit softer but if in the mood he holds a good chance, however the stable are struggling as of late. An outside chance

12. Join Together

Late fast finisher in the Becher Chase here in December and the extra distance looks sure to suit, he just ran out of time that day but jumped well on the whole. Last time in the Grimthorpe at Doncaster he was badly hampered early on and was never on terms after that and subsequently pulled up. That run is easily forgiven and off a very handy mark of 150 he could potentially well handicapped and a bit better than his mark. Doesn't lack anything in stamina and except for his chase debut he jumps well on the whole, a very good chance.

13. Colbert Station

The second of two runners for Ted Walsh (other is Seabass) and Colbert Station is the choice of Champion Jockey AP McCoy who won this on Don't Push It in 2010. Looks as if this trip will suit but not for certain as he is yet to venture over 3 miles, but he looks a fine stayer. He jumps well and could have a big chance if taking to the National fences, the best chance for the trainer but has to defy a 17 pounds rise in the weights. If he can improve then he is a major player in the race.

14. Forpadydeplasterer

Once top class but lost his way from his early chasing career form, posting his first win this season since 2009 and a long string of seconds question his attitude. Major stamina doubts and is easily overlooked.

15. On His Own

Favourite for the race for a long time this season and was travelling very well in the race last year before coming down at Bechers the second time round. Only the one run this season to his name when winning a Grade 2 hurdle in Ireland and is still lightly raced. He runs off exactly the same mark this year and if he gets a clean round of jumping in he is very likely to be there at the end of the race. The choice of Ruby Walsh has to be respected on all known form and his price reflects that, a very strong chance.

16. Joncol

An absolutely Giant horse that could probably take these fences in his stride. Last time he was well put in his place by Sir Des Champs and Flemenstar in a Grade 1 but has been running well since back from injury. If he takes to the faster surface he could well be overpriced as jumping isn't an issue for him but he needs to answer questions about his stamina. He should stay the trip fine but you cant be certain until you see it for your own eyes. A big each way chance at a big price.

17. Balthazar King

For many their each way selection for the race and with his consistency you can see why, he sidestepped Cheltenham this year as the ground wasn't fast enough for him. He has made a bit of a name for himself over the cross country course at Cheltenham as of late showing his versatility. If adapting to these fences he could have a huge chance for an in form stable. Staying wont be too much of an issue and he cant be dismissed lightly, a good chance.

18. Cappa Bleu

These colours were carried in this race for many years by State Of Play and now he is retired Cappa Bleu looks set to take over the reins after his fourth last year. Paul Moloney has described him as safe to sit in as an arm chair showing his confidence in the horse's jumping abilities. All year this race has been the target for him but he has been running well over shorter distance which don't suit at all. Off a two pounds lower mark than last year he will have a huge chance and is a likely winner of the race.

19. Oscar Time

Second to BallaBriggs in the 2011 renewal of the race but has since lost his way in a big style and off the same mark as he was in 2011 can easily be dismissed.

20. Always Waining

Finally after years of trying he makes it into the race and can run in the National instead of the Topham. He has the best record over these fences out of any horse in training winning three times and three consecutive Topham Chase's. In the seven attempts on this course he has completed six times and loves it round here, especially in the spring when he is much improved. The only worry is his stamina but it does seem he has been overlooked somewhat and is a very live outsider at a nice price off a workable mark.

21. Tatenen

Tatenen unseated Andrew Thornton at the Canal Turn last year which is strange for him as he is usually a very sound jumper. The major doubt is his stamina and he is another that is easily overlooked.

22. Treacle

Treacle fell at the tenth on his only run over the National fences last year but if his jumping holds up then he is a very live outsider. Staying isn't too much of an issue for him and he comes into the race in good form as like last year when a staying on third in the Grade 1 hennessy. After last year he is overlooked but it wouldn't be the biggest surprise were he to run a big race and still be in contention turning for home.

23. Lost Glory

A consistent sort who keeps on winning however at a much lower level than this, there is every possibility he will stay the trip today but he needs to defy another 7 pounds rise in the weights. His jumping is more of an asset for him completing all of his 20 runs to date but he does need to improve considerably to win this, small each way chance.

24. Swing Bill

Swing Bill is bound to have his supporters being one of the only grey's in the field and old age has turned him almost white. That could also be his downfall in his prime he was a useful horse but he is a bit old in the tooth now and doesn't really stay this distance. He does jump superbly however and made it round last year when coming 10th and has also been fifth in a Topham round here. But overlooked here.

25. Saint Are

Saint Are is the youngest horse in the race at 7 years old but is one that has good reserves of stamina, he also enjoys running at Aintree. This is the first time he runs on the National course though, his other runs here have been on the Mildmay course. He is prone to making a few mistakes so it will be interesting to see how he takes to these fences, but the main worry is this race will come too early in his career for him and is best watched.

26. Chicago Grey

Chicago Grey is one of the horses in the field with least to answer about his staying ability as he stays all day and is a previous winner of the National Hunt Chase over 4 miles. Last time out he caused a bit of a shock when winning the Red Mills over 2 and a half miles, mostly because he doesn't appear fast enough for that trip. He has only made the trip to Aintree once which was in the race last year, unfortunately he only made it as far as the fifth before he was bought down. If Paul Carberry can get him into a rhythm at the back of the field he will have a huge chance, he is also one of 2 selections from pricewise.

27. Quiscover Fontaine

The second selection today of Pricewise and also the selection of yours truly, he ran in the race last year and was travelling well before coming down at the 17th fence. He runs off the same mark of 141 today and more importantly he gets the good ground he loves and rarely gets in Ireland. In 2011 he was 4th in the Irish National thus proving he has some staying power, obviously he needs a bit more but he is open to it. David Casey gets on very well with him and keeps the ride today which is a positive. I expect this one to run a big race at a big price and is todays Selection.

28. Rare Bob

Rare Bob has run over the National course three times and has completed once, the first time he fell but the second time was in no way his fault when bought down at the 5th. He is usually a very good jumper but he has an annoying tendency to make one silly mistake which costs him the race usually. If he can jump like he did when fifth in the Becher Chase behind West End Rocker he will have an each way chance but he also needs to prove that he can stay. Easier said than done judging by his past performances.

29. The Rainbow Hunter

Kim Bailey has saved The Rainbow Hunter for this race and has also given the ride to Aidan Coleman which is interesting. But on past form he doesn't look good enough despite usually being a sound jumper. Stamina queries make him easily opposable.

30. Becauseicouldntsee

Becauseicouldntsee ran in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham and had a very tough race but ran a creditable fifth behind Same Difference. It would be a monumental ask for him to be competitive here and he unseated his rider round here last year. Easily dismissed.

31. Harry The Viking

Another that ran in the Kim Muir but that looked nothing more than a prep run for today and Ryan Mahon takes the ride. We know he stays and that he is a useful jumper but in all seriousness its hard to see him getting involved today and is on the slow side.

32. Mr Moonshine

Sue Smith is a trainer I am very fond of but her horses aren't really firing too much as of late, Mr Moonshine is one that I have liked for a long time. From his first run I have said he looks like a National horse but he may fare better with another year on his back and more experience. Saying that he is a very slick jumper and stays pretty well, he also has a bit of class about him but like I say this may come a year too early for him. Faint each way claims at best.

33. Mumbles Head

A rank outsider and he isn't getting any younger, fell here in the Becher chase and not seen since December. Before that he was in good form but is biting off a bit more than he can chew today.

34. Ninetieth Minute

Whats up boys won the Coral Cup a few years back and then in the coming seasons ran really well in Grand Nationals. That is exactly what Ninetieth Minute bids to do, however his jumping is sometimes a bit suspect and will need to brush up on that. His last run was promising though but has a lot to find with Colbert Station and again has a small each way chance.

35. Auroras Encore

He really comes into himself at this time of year and was well backed on his second to last run, since then he has disappointed at Kelso. The ground was probably a little too soft for him that day and today's ground will suit him much better. Sue Smith's stable jockey, Ryan Mania has chosen this one over Mr Moonshine and has to be respected after finishing second in last years Scottish National. There are no doubts about his stamina but his jumping will need to improve and despite that he is probably a bit overpriced. A live outsider.

36. Tarquinius

Probably better on soft ground and a very lack lustre display last time out, 100/1 for a reason and easily dismissed.

37. Any Currency

Probably a bit overpriced and has been an improved horse this season after a breathing operation and was jumping well here in the Becher when unseating at the Canal Turn. Didn't look totally in love with the Cross Country fences at Cheltenham but today should be much more to his liking and 150/1 is a bit of an insult to him. A small outside chance but well worth your 50p each way.

38. Major Malarkey

Pulled up early on in the Midlands National with a bruised foot, but he stays pretty well but he is weighted up to his best and he is what he is. Id be very surprised if a 10 year old will find the improvement he will need to ruffle some feathers amongst the big guns. Don't be surprised if he travels well for a long way though.

39. Soll

A big brute of a horse, I saw him at Sandown last time out and he jumped magnificently, definitely the performance of a horse that would take to these fences. He did it all the hard way from the front that day and is definitely not lacking in stamina as he was going away from them again at the end. One slight worry id have is that he may lack a bit of pace for the early part of the race and get himself a bit behind. If he can get a good position then Mark Grant will be in for the ride of his life round these fences and he could well be good enough to win. A strong outsider off a very low weight.

40. Viking Blond

The 40th and final runner in this years National, Viking Blond stays very well and jumps regular fences pretty well. However his only visit here ended up with him falling at the first fence and there is no confidence behind him today. A worthy 100/1 shot.

1st - Quiscover Fontaine
2nd - Cappa Bleu
3rd - Soll
4th - Joncol

So there we have it, all 40 runners of the Grand National. Good luck if you are having a bet and let me know what you are backing. You can follow me on twitter when all the talk is about racing on @lukeyboy1325 I look forward to hearing from you!

Aintree Day 2

Wow is all I say can say about the first day, I was hoping blog number 100 was to be one of the better blogs I put up. Unfortunately it was probably one of the worst, Captain Conan managed to salvage something towards the end of the day for us but admittedly at a short price. I put up 8 selections yesterday, amongst them 8 were four fallers for which I can only apologise for. These were Raya Star, Bold Addition, Ciceron and Lienosus, fortunately every single one of them got up off the turf unscathed.

Tragically, to animal right's campaigners delight, we lost a horse yesterday in the Fox Hunters which is run on the National course. But unlike almost every newspaper will say today, including some moronic Racing Reporters he did not pass away due to the fences or the course. I speak of course about Battlefront who tragically suffered a heart attack during the race yesterday and collapsed when pulled up. If you have any interest in racing whatsoever you will understand that this could have happened anywhere, be it back at home or in the parade ring. The National Fences have not 'claimed their first victim' as many journalists have claimed today, but what do they care, anything that makes them money right?

On a brighter note, Hunt Ball recorded his first win of the season when carrying top weight at Taunton, which is not an easy course to give weight away. His closest rival at the like was the Paul Nicholls trained Jump City, to whom Hunt Ball was giving almost 2 stone in weight to. Defeat never really looked on the cards up the home straight as Hunt Ball sailed over the remaining fences and galloped all the way to the line under Nick Scholfield.

But onto today's card and possibly the race of the season and one certainly with a Kauto Star vs Denman kind of feel to it. That's right, today we finally get to see the mighty Sprinter Sacre take on Flemenstar for the first time over 2 and a half miles, oh and Cue Card is thrown into the mix for good measure. They are joined by Ryanair third For Non Stop and 2012 Champion Chaser Finian's Rainbow with rank outsider of the field Mad Moose. But enough of that and on with today's racing which looks a bit of a treat.

2:00 - Alder Hey Top Novices Hurdle - Forgotten Voice

My Tent Or Yours is a bit of a warm order for today's opener after finishing second in the Supreme Novices behind Champagne Fever. However he had a tough race at Cheltenham and with what looks to be a lack of pace here we oppose the strong pulling favourite. His stable mate Forgotten Voice was top class on the flat rated 113 at his best and last time out won the Dovecote. He then side stepped Cheltenham and has been aimed here for better ground, which he needs and definitely gets. If the race is a crawl early on he could well have too much toe for My Tent Or Yours at the end of the race and utilise his flat speed. He also isn't coming off the back of a tough run at Cheltenham and this is effectively his Gold Cup for the season. Saying that My Tent Or Yours is an exceptional horse and will be tough to beat, but he is by no means bomb proof. (4/1)

2:30 - Mildmay Novices Chase - Sea Of Thunder

This was a very hard choice for me between Rocky Creek and Sea Of Thunder but the latter just shades it on ground he gets for the first time since early season. He had a tall reputation coming over from Ireland when running at Cheltenham in which he was outstayed by Sire Collonges. He then completely bombed on soft ground but that is forgiveable as that is not his preferred going, he was then put away until now, 139 days later. This could mean there was something not right with him or they have been patient and waited for the better ground to come. Either way he stands a fantastic chance and can get Barry Geraghty off to a flyer winning the first two races. His main threat will be from Rocky Creek as he has done nothing wrong this season at all whereas Dynaste is opposable after a very tough race at Cheltenham. Just a note, Sea Of Thunder is also Pricewise so get on early doors before the price crashes. (8/1) Also well worth a reverse forecast with Rocky Creek, not sure as to what the price will be on that however.

Sea Of Thunder has been waited with for ground like this

3:05 - Melling Chase - Flemenstar

So this is it, the match up all racing fans have been longing for this season, Flemenstar vs Sprinter Sacre. The black aeroplane is again a very short price to remain unbeaten over fences but this is by far his toughest test to date over an unknown distance to him. Saying that I have no doubts he will stay, but he takes on the Ryanair winner in Cue Card who was 7 lengths back in last years Arkle over 2 miles. He will also face the selection in Flemenstar who is the best 2 and a half miler in Ireland right now and looks near unbeatable at the trip. He didn't go to Cheltenham as a lung infection ruled him out, but he has travelled over well and is ready to do battle according to trainer Peter Casey. Flemenstar has been tried over 3 miles this season but it is clear he isn't as effective as he is over 2 and a half. Him and Cue Card will most likely be setting the pace which could test Sprinter Sacre's stamina furthermore, but I expect Flemenstar to at least dominate the first 1 and a half miles, after that is anyone's guess. Of course he has a the tallest of tall orders to beat Sprinter Sacre but Aintree could play to his benefits and his price is now a nice each way price. (7/1)

Flemenstar on his way to Landing the Powers Gold Cup

3:40 - John Smiths Topham Chase - Pacha Du Polder

I think we can all agree that this is an impossible race to pick a horse to back with any real confidence, made harder that its over the National Fences. Pacha Du Polder was held in very high regard at the start of the season by Paul Nicholls and last time he came good on his return to a faster surface. At one point he was very fancied for the Hennessy by his stable, but that plan never really matured, but here we are today. He gets a tentative vote with his job being made easier by Ryan Mahon claiming 3 pounds off his top weight of 11-12. Last time was the first time he ran in cheek pieces and they lit him up a treat beating Big Fella Thanks by 5 lengths. They stay on today and providing he takes to the fences can be in with a chance, but as I say a tough race to pick one. (16/1)

Pacha Du Polder winning at Newbury

4:15 - Sefton Novices Hurdle - Our Vinnie

Our Vinnie came over for Cheltenham with a tall reputation but made it no further than the 6th flight when he was bought down by I Shot The Sherriff. It is impossible to say what kind of race he would have run that day, all we can say is that he had settled well. At Fishers Cross reopposes today and it will be interesting to see how he copes with a faster surface, but he could be vulnerable. Our Vinnie is also lightly raced on good ground but has registered some decent performances on it before unlike At Fishers Cross. The selection has a bit to prove but he received a good training report earlier in the week and is open to a bit more improvement, a fast pace will suit. (8/1)

Our Vinnie looks to bounce back today

4:50 - John Smiths Daily Mirror punters club Handicap Hurdle - Barbatos

Barbatos was a one time very smart novice hurdler before injury struck and he was out for the remainder of the season. He was off for just over a year before returning under a tender ride at Cheltenham in January on bottomless ground. He then went to the Coral Cup at the Festival and finished a respectable staying on 7th behind Medinas. The return to real good ground will help him no end today and he should continue his upward curve a pound lower in the weights. He was also the only one in the Novice ranks to put up a fight against Fingal Bay on more than one occasion, one would have to think if injury didn't strike he would be running in higher company. (10/1)

Barbatos beating Forgotten Gold and Batonnier (far right)

5:25 - John Smith's Mares' standard open NH Flat Race - Midnight Minx

When Anthony Honeyball and Rachael Green team up with a bumper horse it is always well worth a second look, this one is no different. She ran at Sandown behind a few of these including Mollys A Diva, but she hated the ground that day and can be forgiven, though her run was still encouraging. It was bottomless that day, to be seen at her best she really does need good ground after wins on Good and then on the fibresand at Kempton. The best of the form coming at Kempton when having Call me a star and Glorious Twelfth behind behind her while showing a battling attitude. Rachael Green may not be the most well known jockey in the weighing room but she is very good value for her three pound claim and is a jockey to watch. Midnight Minx to land the finale on day two. (14/1)

Lets hope for a much better day than yesterday and a winner or two, lets also hope that all our brave Jockeys and Equine friends come back safely.

Aintree Day One

Cheltenham still seems a not so distant memory yet Aintree is already upon us and the Grand National Meeting begins today. For many people the whole meeting is about one day, most of the people attending on Saturday wont even know there are other days of racing. But before Saturday we have two top class days of racing, during which we will be treated to the long awaited match up of Sprinter Sacre vs Flemenstar. The latter missed Cheltenham with a lung infection but arrives at Aintree with one thing firmly in his sights, to topple the mighty Sprinter Sacre. The Ryanair winner Cue Card turns up to assert his dominance of the 2 and a half mile division, but he has no easy task in doing that. Before that little treat however we must get today out of the way.

But first a thank you, this is blog number 100 for me personally and last week I passed 10,000 views on here, that may not seem like too many for some of you, but it is far more successful than I ever thought it would be. So if you are reading this right now, thank you for contributing and giving me the will power to keep writing this weekly. Through writing this I have met some amazing people on twitter and other types of Social Media and I'm definitely planning the next 100 blogs already.

Today we have triumph hurdle rematches, Champion Hurdle rematches and our first view of the Grand National fences for the week when the Foxhunters take to the course. Paul Nicholls saddles the favourite in Gwanako ridden by Jody Sole who is better known for riding on the Royal Artillery and Grand Military races at Sandown. His equine partner will be remembered for sending Sam Thomas into orbit in one of his runs here previously when refusing to jump the chair. He is opposed by a horse Paul Nicholls part owns and used to train called Bold Addition who is partnered by Stephen Clements.

One last point before we begin the important stuff today and one of a sad nature. This week saw us bid farewell to the fan favourite Fair Along who sadly passed away of Colic on Monday. Known for his pure guts and determination he will always live on in the heart of Racing fans after running at 8 separate Cheltenham Festivals. Throughout his career he was placed in a Triumph Hurdle, an Arkle, A Champion Chase and fourth in what we now call the JLT handicap chase. He also landed back to back West Yorkshire hurdle's as well as wins on the flat and over fences at a range of distances. He posted his last victory at Newbury in November in a 17 runner 3 mile Handicap Hurdle under Richard Johnson at 33/1. This was to be the second last time we would see him on the racecourse as he went on to finish 14th at the Festival in the Pertemps this year under top weight. On that slightly sour note I'm sure you will all join me in bidding Fair Along a final farewell and say with me, R.I.P Fair Along, we will miss you old boy. Fair Along - March 23rd 2002 -  April 1st 2013 Aged 11 years old.

2:00 - 4 Y O Juvenile Hurdle - Vasco Du Ronceray

Nicky Henderson is double handed in the opener with Barry Geraghty choosing Rolling Star and Tony McCoy getting the leg up on Vasco Du Ronceray. They both participated in the Triumph Hurdle on the Friday of the Festival, the selection just got the better of his stable mate finishing 5th and 6th respectively. He has however been beaten by Irish Saint who comes here fresh today, but Rolling Star beat Irish Saint so the form is muddling to say the least. The reason for leaning towards Vasco Du ronceray today is that it will be the first time this year he will have encountered genuinely good ground as it was pretty soft at Cheltenham. To win this race round Aintree you need to have some speed about you, the selection has plenty but Irish Saint really had to work to beat him and looks a stayer in the making. Saying that he was giving away 3 pounds that day. But on better ground we will take Vasco Du Ronceray to land the opener for Nicky Henderson and AP McCoy. (8/1)

Vasco Du Ronceray will relish the better ground today

2:30 - Betfred Bowl - Menorah

Everything coming here today bar two had a tough race at Cheltenham, over three miles that could really test some of their fitness. Menorah never had a cut at the Festival in the Ryanair and was pulled up after a lack lustre effort, that could be a blessing in disguise for today in a fitness aspect. These days he is a bit of an enigma in a sense that you never quite know what horse will turn up, but his record on flat tracks has always been better than undulating. He came to Aintree last year after running at Cheltenham and surprisingly jumped his rivals into submission. The only time Menorah has ventured to 3 miles was in the Denman Chase at Newbury when behind Silviniaco Conti and The Giant Bolster who reoppose today. Saying that it was on soft ground and if he is ever going to stay the trip today around Aintree will be his best chance of that. He will however have a tough task pegging back Silviniaco Conti and realistically may just be playing for a place. (18/1)

3:05 - Aintree Hurdle - Grandouet

Grandouet just about broke my heart when he came down at Cheltenham when still going very powerfully in the Champion Hurdle. That doesn't particularly worry me as jumping is usually his forte and Aintree is a much easier jumping track. I am adamant that he would have won that day but we will never know and reports are the fall has had no effect on him and is working very well again. The main question mark today is over his stamina, but for me I don't doubt his stamina at all after he won the International hurdle in 2011 over 2 miles and a furlong at Cheltenham. He was going clear that day after Overturn set a fast pace as usual, he was then off for a year before reappearing in the same race. On bottomless ground which is far from ideal for him, he pushed Zarkandar to 2 lengths when giving him 4 pounds. It has to be noted that on that day Nicky Henderson was quoted to saying 'I have left a bit of work still on him' yet he ran that well. Barry Geraghty also hops off Oscar Whisky who is seeking a hat trick in this race to ride him, meaning AP McCoy takes the ride on Oscar Whisky. This horse is pure class and I'm still confident that he will be one of the top two milers we have seen for some time. Today could well be the day he shows his class and announces himself on the Champion Hurdle scene. (4/1) Raya star comes here fresh and is more than worth an each way bet on some of the form lines to his name. (33/1)

Grandouet could well show us how good he is today

3:40 - Aintree Foxhunters Chase - Bold Addition

It is rare that I will fancy a horse over the National Fences as much as I fancy Bold Addition, but he has done absolutely everything right this year and has been impressive in doing so. He defied a break of just over a year to win easily at Sandown before winning easier at Warwick when beating Silverburn. The may thing a horse needs to win around the National Fences is to be a good jumper, Bold Addition is certainly that and has proved so this season. As a novice hurdler he had some very smart form including a 2nd to Sizing Symphony at Cheltenham before going chasing. On chase debut he was second to Mr Moonshine at Haydock, after which he was off for some time, giving the idea that something wasn't right with him that day. He isn't ground dependent at all, recording wins from Good to Firm up to Soft so the faster ground wont be any problem to him today at all. One last thing is that he has one of the best amateur's in the game on board with Stephen Clements taking the ride, a big positive. A very strong selection today. (11/2)

Bold Addition on his way to winning at Sandown

4:15 - Red Rum Handicap Chase - Ciceron

Ciceron has been ultra consistent over fences which couldn't be said for his time as a hurdler. He comes here off the back of a defeat at the hands of the reopposing Rebel Rebellion, that was on Heavy ground though, something his opponent prefers. Ciceron travelled well for a long way that day but tired late on and was caught for third by Fairy Rath, He gave me the feeling that day that he was longing for good ground. He gets that today and also gets in off a very low weight of 10-3 and runs off a mark he has won on before of 127. The Venetia Williams yard have been in good form for a long time and any runner they have right now you'd be foolish to over look them. For that reason Ciceron is the selection to land the spoils today and he looks a very good each way bet against others who ran at Cheltenham. (16/1)

Ciceron (near side) has the class to figure prominently today

4:50 - Betfred Manifesto Novices Chase - Captain Conan

My first thoughts when I looked at this race was that Captain Conan is overpriced, however another glance and it is a pretty weak race in truth. He tired up the hill in the Jewson to finish fifth after being prominent for most of the way, however last season he ran his best race here. Nicky Henderson has claimed all year that he needs good ground to be seen to full effect, and just like his stable mate Vasco Du Ronceray, gets that for the first time this season. There are no qualms about his jumping and the flat track will help him stay much better, he also has a bit of pace about him. One of the main worries going into this season was that he is a bridle horse and finds nothing for pressure, he duly crushed that belief at Sandown when rallying to get up late. He brings the best form on offer to the plate today and to be quite honest I cant see why he isn't odds on. A strong fancy. (13/8)

Captain Conan on his way to winning the Scilly Isles Novices Chase

5:25 - Silver Cross Handicap Hurdle - Lienosus

I was very taken with the manner of his Fontwell win after struggling during the race he found more and more to win easily, the step up to 3 miles is no shock. He is from the same family as Simply Gifted who was third in a National suggesting he has bags of stamina and is very unexposed. After a point to point win we saw him make his rules debut in the Persian War, he was third beaten only by Wonderful Charm and Ballybough Pat. Next up he was a bit of an eye catcher at Haydock behind Clondaw Kaempfer when staying on in terrible ground over 2 miles. A good yardstick of Paul Nicholls' stable in Landscape was 22 lengths further back in third under Ruby Walsh. Lienosus has always promised to be a useful performer and as a result was bought for £25,000 at the Chelenham sales last May. Off a mark of 131 he could be a bit well in at the bottom here and no matter what happens today will remain one to watch. (8/1)
