It seems like it was just last week that the Cheltenham buzz was here and we were all expecting My Tent Or Yours to win the Supreme. But time has passed and today is the start of Royal Ascot, like Cheltenham we have a short priced favourite in the first with Animal Kingdom who won this years Dubai World Cup. Last year we also had a short priced favourite, when I say short priced I mean Frankel Priced when he destroyed the field at 1/10. Today also brings back the English 2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach who looks to bounce back from his spectacular flop in the Epsom Derby. He lines up with his old rival Toronado and from Ballydoyle the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Magician and Epsom Derby sixth in Mars.
Also featuring on the card today is the King's Stand which will see Mike De Kock's champion sprinter line up with Shea Shea when he locks horns with Reckless Abandon. Also lining up is Australian representative Shamexpress for trainer Danny O'Brien, those two raiders try to follow in the footsteps of Little Bridge who won this last year for Hong Kong. Supporting the card today we have the two Juvenile races starting with the Coventry Stakes won last year by Dawn Approach himself. The second of the two year old races is the yearly headache that we call the Windsor Castle Stakes in which 27 head to post. Near the top of the market is Wesley Ward's representative Ogermeister who won this race with Strike The Tiger in 2009. The second to last race also features our first handicap of the week when the stayers take to the track over 2 miles 4 furlongs in the Ascot Stakes, won last year by Simenon for Willie Mullins.

Royal Ascot - Queen Anne Stakes - Gregorian
If you are a regular reader of my blog you will know that I am a big fan of Gregorian and since last year I have been saying he is a Group one horse, today he gets to prove that. In my eyes Animal Kingdom is a 'good thing' but there is no value in the price he is unless drifting markedly on the day. Gregorian holds some value however in a race when a lot are fully exposed, he comes with some improvement possibly left in him. Last time he won nicely at Epsom in a Group 3 despite absolutely hating the course to the extent I had given up turning for home. But his class proved vital and he managed to hold off Gabrial and Penitent who again should be big threats today. If Gregorian can continue his progression then it would be no surprise at all were he to ruffle a few feathers today and at least make the frame. (18/1)

Kingsgate Native has been a very reliable yardstick this year finishing second and first respectively both at double figure odds when put up on this blog. We keep the faith with him today and once again he is a fantastic each way price down to the addition of Shea Shea at the head of the market. In the Temple Stakes at Haydock he managed to reverse the Newmarket form with Sole Power in good style, also beating Reckless Abandon and the unlucky Swiss Spirit. He will need to step up again today but has shown previously that he has bags of ability and retains all his enthusiasm for the game. Life wont be as easy for him today but with a strongly run 5 furlongs at Ascot he should be a closer and once again run a good race for Shane Kelly. For me Reckless Abandon is the main danger and the one to beat but I cant have Kingsgate Native going off a price that big against horses he has beaten this season already. (14/1)

Royal Ascot - St James' Palace Stakes - Mars
Our previous selection Gregorian was third in this race last year but this year looks a race full of class with Dawn Approach dropped back in trip to a mile. Today he has a pacemaker with Leitir Mor and Ballydoyle bring their own pacemaker in the shape of George Vancouver. Them two factors will no doubt help out Mars today as the Derby was not run to suit at all and it turned into a bit of a sprint. Today will be a really strongly run mile and although Dawn Approach is a very strong rival, Mars can make his presence felt here. I cant fathom why Magician is such a short price despite his Irish 2000 Guineas victory in which I feel he was flattered somewhat. Joseph O'Brien gave him a great ride that day which isn't something you hear me say often, but the other jockeys were caught napping. Mars however didn't receive the greatest ride in the Derby but still ran on for sixth and is more than worth another go this afternoon. Mars to live up to the hype he caused last season from a strong pace. (12/1)

Royal Ascot - Coventry Stakes - Riverboat Springs
You would be hard pressed to find a horse that hated Epsom more than Riverboat Springs did last time out when behind the reopposing Thunder Strike. But he went into everyone's notebook that day after flying home from an impossible position under William Buick who keeps the ride. Passing the furlong marker he was the best part of 10 lengths behind Thunder Strike but managed to close that up to 3 and a quarter lengths at the line. That would explain the reason that both of them are around the same price but at Ascot I would expect Riverboat Springs to run a big race. Despite there being a vast amount of unexposed runners today Mick Channon's Colt can make his experience count and put it all up to them. The main thing early on for William Buick to do will be to settle him, if he can do that then the chances of him flying home late are very high, it would take a good horse to catch him if so. Riverboat Springs to put right his interesting Woodcote run last time. (10/1)

Royal Ascot - Ascot Stakes - Suraj
Now a real head scratcher as the stayers go to post in the Ascot stakes, a race which has been kind to the National Hunt horses over the years. It is a horse that has recently been showing his worth over hurdles that is the selection here with Michael Bell's Suraj after two runs over hurdles for Jonjo O'Neill. It was his last run that really captured my attention though when at Chester, he was drawn 15 of 17 which at Chester is near impossible to win from. It also didn't help that he absolutely walked out of the stalls and had to hunt around at the back of the field, from then on Hayley Turner rightly didn't give him a hard time. He still stayed on at the one pace under hands and heels to finish 10th and 11 and three quarter lengths off the winner. That run is easily forgotten but it does mean that he is dropped two pounds for today's race and you can add an extra 2 pounds off for the four year old allowance. So instead of a mark of 95 which would make him joint top weight he gets to run off 93 which in a race like this can help no end. Suraj to refind the winning thread. (20/1)

Royal Ascot - Windsor Castle Stakes - Peterkin
As always the Windsor Castle is a lottery to pick a horse but this year the magic pin has fallen on Peterkin for Mark Johnston. In a race where all 27 could win a Johnston horse may not be the worst way to go as they are generally very tough and a lot more forward as a younger individual. I first saw Peterkin at Doncaster when he won impressively despite being very green and almost pulling himself up late on. On that basis he was a lot more value than his 3 and three quarter lengths of victory and it could have easily been five or more. Once again he was green when hanging off the rails in a good race at Windsor when conceding 7 pounds to the second horse and the winner looking potentially quite smart. He was still green that day which is a slight worry but Mark Johnston wouldn't bring him here if he wasn't ready to run in a big race. Hopefully he can jump out well and try to make all for Joe Fanning. This son of Invincible Spirit can land a surprise here in the Windsor Castle. (40/1)

Dutch To Give A Masterpiece At Sandown
Good Morning and a happy weekend to all you racing fans, the sun is hopefully out where you are the birds are cheeping and Royal Ascot is days away. Ballydoyle dropped a bombshell today that Magician is unlikely to take his place in the St. James' Palace with some Minor Bruising. This will most likely make Dawn Approach an odds on chance to emulate Frankel by winning the 2000 Guineas and St James' Palace. But today we have some good racing from Sandown as they head the Saturday meetings with York also holding Listed action. Supporting meetings are from Musselburgh, Bath with evening meetings at Leicester, Lingfield and in Ireland Limerick. We also have the jumpers in action at Hexham this evening where the Champ AP McCoy has a few rides.
It was a truly awful week for racing as one of the most loved and most talented trainers passed away after a long battle with Cancer. Of course I speak of the great immortal Sir Henry Cecil who passed away on the morning of Tuesday 11th June 2013. I don't wish to dwell on this topic too much and bring the mood down, I have however written a whole article on the life and times of Sir Henry. The link to that page is just below if you would like to read it, I just hope I have managed to do him justice. R.I.P Sir Henry.

Last week was one of them days where you wanted to throw everything at the television as nothing went our way. Firstly we had Nabucco who ran well but just got out battled and went down by a length to Niceofyoutotellme. Then we felt even more hard done by when Pastoral Player got beat a short head when charging late at the eventual winner Amarillo. What made that loss worse was that he didn't get a clear run, if he had then it would have been most likely we would of had a winner. Finally we managed a winner with our NAP of the day with Dutch Masterpiece who took his handicap in really good style by 3 and a quarter lengths. But it was back to annoying ways with our last selection when Elhaame was a staying on second behind Double Discount to be beaten 3 parts of a length. Hopefully we have more luck today!

2:20 Sandown - Ashaadd
Ashaadd won handsomely at this track last time but over a furlong shorter when finishing very strongly under hands and heels when finding a gap. Ryan Moore was on board that day and he keeps the ride, but you can hardly say he worked Ashaadd too hard in the closing stages, but still won by a going away half a length. He also had some smart two year old form to his name when on debut he was second to Ask Dad by a neck and beaten just over 2 lengths by Pearl Acclaim. However the interesting thing is that despite going up 5 pounds for his last win he runs from 6 pounds lower in the weights. This is down to a very handy 3 year olds allowance so effectively he runs off bottom weight and a mark of 84, his official mark is 95. Long story short he has 11 pounds in hand, but this could also be his downfall that he is a three year old taking on the older horses for the first time. I am more than willing to take a chance however with the step up in trip looking sure to suit. This could be a very good piece of placing by Roger Varian providing he can stay out of trouble, Ashaadd to win the first. (4/1)

Sam Sharp is the first of our runners to look out for that take their chance today, my notes on him in my tracker are as follows. Best at a mile, useful horse but always seems to find trouble, could land a few nice prizes this year. Last time out was no different to that on his reappearance when he again met trouble in running and was behind a wall of horse a furlong out. Pass that furlong marker he was back in twelfth and out of it until Richard Kingscote switched him wide and he flew home for third. The handicapper has been kind and kept Sam Sharp at the same mark for today's race which throws him in with a huge chance. I must confess I was probably wrong about him being best at a mile, at least he was last year that's for sure. On the basis of his reappearance he seemed to be a bit outpaced early on and as I mentioned flew hope so the extra furlong shouldn't bother him. Everything crossed that this time he gets some luck in running and can repeat his Leicester success from last September. (10/1)

It's not often we have the same NAP two weeks running but that is exactly what we have we with Dutch Masterpiece after he obliged last week. This race has kind of fallen apart, as I am writing this a representative of Middleham Park racing has said Smoothtalkinrascal wont be running. He is in the process of being sold to Cheveley Park Stud and is a non runner today, all unofficial right now of course. But this makes Dutch Masterpiece's job a heck of a lot easier as in my eyes Smoothtalkinrascal was his biggest danger. Back to Dutch Masterpiece though, he was very taking when landing a handicap last weekend at Chester, going on to win pretty easily by 3 and a quarter lengths. As mentioned last week 2 of his defeats came when he hated the undulations of Goodwood and 6 furlongs was a bit too far at Newmarket. But in my eyes he is a Group race horse in the making and the Gary Moore yard really like him, Dutch Masterpiece to go in again. (15/2) (There will be a rule 4 on that price due to Smoothtalkinrascal coming out)

On his seasonal reappearance he was very awkward when push came to shove giving Robert Tart no help at all yet still a decent second. In his latest outing over course and distance everything finally fell into place when Paul Hanagan took over in the saddle, when just getting up by a flared nostril. He was much more genuine in the finish of the race and having a jockey with the experience of ex champion Paul Hanagan will have helped, he keeps the ride today. A thing that was against him last time was the ground, officially it was given as Good, but if you watch the race it is a lot softer than good. Testing ground was his downfall at Goodwood last season and a return to a fast surface will see him to good effect. My comment in my tracker for him is as follows. Awkward ride but very talented, if he gets his act together he is the type to go on spree. With that comment, hopefully Mr Hanagan can once again find the key to Ashdown Lad and bring about some more improvement off a 2 pound higher mark.

Sir Henry Cecil - Goodbye To A Friend
Yesterday morning the racing world was put in a state of disbelief when the news of Sir Henry Cecil's death came through. It was news that not only rendered a person speechless but news that would bring about so much emotion.
The word Legend and Great is thrown around in sport, but that is exactly what Sir Henry Cecil was a sporting great and a wonderful man. He had been through his ups and downs, showing remarkable strength and courage to come back against all the doubters and in a way, himself.
In 1969 Cecil took out his training licence after working as an assistant to his stepfather for a period spanning four years. In the same season as he took out his licence he was noted for training the Eclipse winner Wolver Hollow, a win which he would follow up with Wollow in 1976 and again with Gunner B two years later. A year after his first win he trained his first Royal Ascot winner in the Queen Alexandra Stakes with Parthenon, his first of 75 winners at the Royal Meeting.
As a trainer he only had to wait four years before his first classic winner in 1973, after Cloonagh won the Irish 1000 Guineas. However his first English Classic came at his beloved Newmarket when Bolkonski won the 2000 Guineas partnered by father of Frankie, Gianfranco Dettori. They were to be his only classic winners before moving to his long time home of Warren Place, which he acquired from his at the time father in law Sir Noel Murless.
When someone mentions the name Sir Henry Cecil, racing fan's mind's immediately think of Warren Place, where he trained from 1976 to his day of passing. Before the turn of the century Sir Henry was regarded as one of the best trainers of his current time, winning the Champion Trainer title 10 times from 1976-1993. Even in the year of his transition to Warren Place he managed to send out the 2000 Guineas winner with Wollow, once again with Gianfranco Dettori in the saddle, landing back to back wins in the race. It took him 3 years at Warren Place till he landed the Fillies equivalent when One In A Million won the 1000 Guineas, this time Joe Mercer did the steering.
It wasn't until 1985 until he won his first Classic at Epsom, but it was more than worth the wait as he and Steve Cauthen first won the Oaks with Oh So Sharp, then the Derby with Slip Anchor. Oh So Sharp went on to win the ladies triple crown after a narrow victory in the 1000 guineas when again partnered by Cauthen. Cecil won three more Epsom Derby's with Reference Point in 1987, Commander In Chief in 1993 and finally with Oath in 1999. But it was Oh So Sharp who stole the year despite Slip Anchor being the top rated European Horse on a mark of 136 after his 7 length Derby win. However Oh So Sharp did win the top rated European three year old filly award off a mark of 131 after her St. Leger victory.
But it is for his handling of fillies that he will be fondly remembered, landing the 1000 Guineas 6 times but topping that with 8 victories in the Epsom Oaks. After Oh So Sharp was the heroine of the 1985 Oaks, he followed up in 1988 once again with a Sheik Mohammed owned horse. This time it was Diminuendo that won the Oaks, only for the duo of Cecil and Cauthen to win the race again the year after with Snow Bride. After that victory in 1989 there was a break of 7 years till the next Oaks win at Warren Place when Lady Carla won in 1996. However that opened the floodgates and Cecil won the Oaks four times between 1996 and 2000 when Love Divine won under Richard Quinn.
Things had gone fantastically career wise for the Master of Warren Place even after Sheikh Mohammed had withdrawn his string of 40 horses from the yard. But in the year of 2000 His twin brother David passed away of Cancer which started a long cold run for Cecil. With his stable once of 200 now down to 50, the racing public began to call for his retirement, saying that he was past it. But against everyone's word he carried on, everyone but Prince Khalid Abdullah who kept his full faith during this period. During the time of July 2000 through to October 2006, Cecil had failed to send out a Group 1 winner, something unheard of by someone his class and talent. In the season of 2005 Warren Place had only 12 winners throughout the whole string of 50 horses, for the first time Cecil began to doubt himself and mention retirement.
As if things weren't bad enough, Sir Henry was diagnosed with Stomach Cancer in 2006, a hit that for most people would be the icing on the cake. But Sir Henry came back in admirable style and throughout it all despite physically declining, mentally he never lost his edge. Although gaining the sympathy of the public, that wasn't enough and the next chapter is quite incredible to us mere mortals.
In the Oaks of 2007, a race that had been so good to Sir Henry over the years, he saddled two runners including 9/4 favourite Passage Of Time. But it was his lesser fancied Light Shift who swept to the front with just over 2 furlongs to go, but almost as soon as she did that she was challenged. The challenger was her to be old rival Peeping Fawn in the hands of Martin Dwyer, while victory looked unlikely for Light Burst she knuckled down and battled. During that fight to the line she was joined but never headed with Ted Durcan aboard leaving not one eye dry on the downs that afternoon. Against all the odds Sir Henry Cecil had another classic winner and was back in the eye of the public and the media. That was his 24th Classic winner, of course with there to be one more incredible and breathtaking performance left.
Cecil began to repay Prince Khalid Abdullah when training the frequent top class winners with horses such as Midday and Twice Over. But there was one last hurrah from the Master of Warren Place, that 'hurrah' came in the form of Frankel, arguably the best thoroughbred to have ever lived. Frankel ran a total of 14 times and was never beaten in any of them, but it was on 30th April 2011 in the 2000 Guineas when we realised just how good he was. Rerouted was the pacemaker for his stablemate, or so he was meant to be. But from the gates opening Frankel was out in front and after 2 and a half furlongs into the race, half the field were off the bridle trying to keep up. They tried in vain as the public sat back and watched a true great dominate Group 1 horses to win by a very easy and never in doubt 6 lengths.
After his 2000 Guineas romp, Frankel went on to win 8 more Group 1 races varying from a mile up to a mile and two furlongs. Sir Henry Cecil was knighted in 2011 by Her Majesty, and if you could find a more deserving person in any sport I would be shocked. He earned the title as the Master of Warren Place through his 25 Classic winners throughout the course of his career and his presence on the racecourse.
Sir Henry was taken from us after a long fight with Stomach Cancer just a week before Royal Ascot starts, a meeting in which he trained no fewer than 75 winners, a record for some time to come. But it is not his incredible record on the course we will remember him best for. We will remember him for being the perfect gentleman, for having impeccable manners no matter who you are. But more importantly for the relationship he had with a racehorse, his zest and fight for life and for the way he captured every heart of the public. His legacy will live on through his three children and on the racecourse in them Khalid Abdullah colours worn by Tom Queally.
Like the vast majority of you reading this, you won't have known British Horse Racing without a Sir Henry Cecil leading the way. I just hope that I have managed to capture at least half the man he was, and that his name live on through everyone's little personal memory of the great man.
With that I conclude this run-through of the incredible life and man that was Sir Henry Richard Amherst Cecil. I ask each and every one of you to join me in saying a fond farewell and with lumps in our throats, Goodbye Sir Henry, thank you for all the memories and for being the leading light in British Horse Racing. The word Legend and Great is thrown around in sport, but that is exactly what Sir Henry Cecil was a sporting great and a wonderful man. He had been through his ups and downs, showing remarkable strength and courage to come back against all the doubters and in a way, himself.

As a trainer he only had to wait four years before his first classic winner in 1973, after Cloonagh won the Irish 1000 Guineas. However his first English Classic came at his beloved Newmarket when Bolkonski won the 2000 Guineas partnered by father of Frankie, Gianfranco Dettori. They were to be his only classic winners before moving to his long time home of Warren Place, which he acquired from his at the time father in law Sir Noel Murless.
When someone mentions the name Sir Henry Cecil, racing fan's mind's immediately think of Warren Place, where he trained from 1976 to his day of passing. Before the turn of the century Sir Henry was regarded as one of the best trainers of his current time, winning the Champion Trainer title 10 times from 1976-1993. Even in the year of his transition to Warren Place he managed to send out the 2000 Guineas winner with Wollow, once again with Gianfranco Dettori in the saddle, landing back to back wins in the race. It took him 3 years at Warren Place till he landed the Fillies equivalent when One In A Million won the 1000 Guineas, this time Joe Mercer did the steering.
It wasn't until 1985 until he won his first Classic at Epsom, but it was more than worth the wait as he and Steve Cauthen first won the Oaks with Oh So Sharp, then the Derby with Slip Anchor. Oh So Sharp went on to win the ladies triple crown after a narrow victory in the 1000 guineas when again partnered by Cauthen. Cecil won three more Epsom Derby's with Reference Point in 1987, Commander In Chief in 1993 and finally with Oath in 1999. But it was Oh So Sharp who stole the year despite Slip Anchor being the top rated European Horse on a mark of 136 after his 7 length Derby win. However Oh So Sharp did win the top rated European three year old filly award off a mark of 131 after her St. Leger victory.

But it is for his handling of fillies that he will be fondly remembered, landing the 1000 Guineas 6 times but topping that with 8 victories in the Epsom Oaks. After Oh So Sharp was the heroine of the 1985 Oaks, he followed up in 1988 once again with a Sheik Mohammed owned horse. This time it was Diminuendo that won the Oaks, only for the duo of Cecil and Cauthen to win the race again the year after with Snow Bride. After that victory in 1989 there was a break of 7 years till the next Oaks win at Warren Place when Lady Carla won in 1996. However that opened the floodgates and Cecil won the Oaks four times between 1996 and 2000 when Love Divine won under Richard Quinn.
Things had gone fantastically career wise for the Master of Warren Place even after Sheikh Mohammed had withdrawn his string of 40 horses from the yard. But in the year of 2000 His twin brother David passed away of Cancer which started a long cold run for Cecil. With his stable once of 200 now down to 50, the racing public began to call for his retirement, saying that he was past it. But against everyone's word he carried on, everyone but Prince Khalid Abdullah who kept his full faith during this period. During the time of July 2000 through to October 2006, Cecil had failed to send out a Group 1 winner, something unheard of by someone his class and talent. In the season of 2005 Warren Place had only 12 winners throughout the whole string of 50 horses, for the first time Cecil began to doubt himself and mention retirement.
As if things weren't bad enough, Sir Henry was diagnosed with Stomach Cancer in 2006, a hit that for most people would be the icing on the cake. But Sir Henry came back in admirable style and throughout it all despite physically declining, mentally he never lost his edge. Although gaining the sympathy of the public, that wasn't enough and the next chapter is quite incredible to us mere mortals.

In the Oaks of 2007, a race that had been so good to Sir Henry over the years, he saddled two runners including 9/4 favourite Passage Of Time. But it was his lesser fancied Light Shift who swept to the front with just over 2 furlongs to go, but almost as soon as she did that she was challenged. The challenger was her to be old rival Peeping Fawn in the hands of Martin Dwyer, while victory looked unlikely for Light Burst she knuckled down and battled. During that fight to the line she was joined but never headed with Ted Durcan aboard leaving not one eye dry on the downs that afternoon. Against all the odds Sir Henry Cecil had another classic winner and was back in the eye of the public and the media. That was his 24th Classic winner, of course with there to be one more incredible and breathtaking performance left.

Cecil began to repay Prince Khalid Abdullah when training the frequent top class winners with horses such as Midday and Twice Over. But there was one last hurrah from the Master of Warren Place, that 'hurrah' came in the form of Frankel, arguably the best thoroughbred to have ever lived. Frankel ran a total of 14 times and was never beaten in any of them, but it was on 30th April 2011 in the 2000 Guineas when we realised just how good he was. Rerouted was the pacemaker for his stablemate, or so he was meant to be. But from the gates opening Frankel was out in front and after 2 and a half furlongs into the race, half the field were off the bridle trying to keep up. They tried in vain as the public sat back and watched a true great dominate Group 1 horses to win by a very easy and never in doubt 6 lengths.
After his 2000 Guineas romp, Frankel went on to win 8 more Group 1 races varying from a mile up to a mile and two furlongs. Kirsty Milczarek Interview
Kirsty Milczarek is one of the leading women jockeys and has been proving herself against jockeys all over the world to good effect during the past few years. Based in Newmarket she rides out and race rides for Luca Cumani amongst other trainers on both the all weather and turf.
As a 20 year old Milczarek took the decision to leave a very successful show jumping career in which she competed at international level. She broke through into the Great Britain squad when being taught by none other than part of the winning Grand National team, Harvey Smith, who himself came from show jumping. But when money began to get tight she took it upon herself to go in to racing through recommendation of her
brother Jonjo, also an apprentice at the time for Chris Wall.
During the transition she gained valuable help from Harvey again, and rode her first winner on 18th September 2004. Her willing partner was the Julia Feilden trained Levantine who went off at odds of 12/1 but a determined Milczarek got the Gelding up late on. She would go on to partner the son of Sadler's Wells four more times finishing a best placed 2nd of 19 at Kempton on the turf. That was the only success to the name of Levantine in his career who also went on to be useful over timber.
Kirsty really began to catch the public's eye during the 2007 season over the winter months which culminated in winning the Apprentice title for the winter season. In the same season she had ended up coming overall runner up to Chris Catlin but ahead of female counterpart Hayley Turner. On a personal note I first noticed Kirsty when my mother tried pronouncing her name, needless to say she got the Kirsty part right. If only she had known her more recognised nickname 'Milkshake' we wouldn't of had that problem.
Since that season her career has gone into free fall, and to date her biggest win came aboard the Andrew Balding trained I Love Me in the Tattersalls Millions Auction Trophy at Newmarket. The win came in 2010 when the Cape Cross filly was making her debut and was always up with the pace under a cool Milczarek. You wouldn't have guessed she was making her debut until running around a furlong from home when seeing the crowd. But for the first time Kirsty gave her a tap behind the saddle and she went on again to land the £111,539 winning prize belying her odds of a 50/1 outsider. That remains the filly's only win from 11 attempts and has been partnered by Milczarek a further 2 times, finishing 5th on both outings.

Amongst the trainers Kirsty has drummed up a relationship with is James Toller who trains the apple of her eye with Rewarded. Throughout the first four races Kirsty had partnered him in all of them and together they had a 75% strike rate winning 3 out of four, albeit with one Walkover at Sandown. Since then the duo have found winning harder but have consistently ran with credit including one trip to Deauville. Most recently however Rewarded gained success in the Festival Stakes at Goodwood under two weeks ago, a win which
I am fairly sure her screams of delight woke me up over here in Canada.
One of the lesser known facts about Kirsty is that she partnered the much loved mare Snow Fairy to her first career success, of course a filly at the time. This came on the polytrack at Lingfield on Snow Fairy's second visit to the racecourse and pulled away well to win by 3 1/2 lengths from Baby Dottie. That would be her last victory as a two year old, going on to win a listed race at Goodwood before winning the Epsom and Irish Oaks.
Like many in the sport, her career has had its ups and downs, but the future is very bright for a still young Kirsty Milczarek. Amongst herself and weighing room colleague Hayley Turner they have knocked down the wall between Male and Female jockeys, not physically of course. But great success is only round the corner and I would be surprised if this season doesn't bring around a big win or 2 for Kirsty.

Saturday 8th June
Good morning racing fans I trust you all slept well ahead of this huge day of racing, I say this in a sarcastic tone unfortunately. This is one of the poorest Saturday's of racing in my memory and I'm sure some of yours as well, but this is all building up to Royal Ascot of course. We race today at a host of venues, the one taking centre stage is up at Haydock where they hold the Timeform Jury Stakes, in which Eton Forever goes to post. We also race at Chester, Catterick, Stratford, Newbury, Beverley and at flat racing HQ, Newmarket as well as Navan over in Ireland. A feast of flat racing with one jumps meeting thrown in for good measure, the class may not be there but we are spoiled for choice.
As everyone knows last week was the Epsom Derby and it was expected to be contested between Ballydoyle and Dawn Approach from Godolphin. It is fair to say that Dawn Approach was oh so disappointing and the writing was on the wall a long way from home. With Joseph O'Brien setting a slow pace on Battle Of Marengo, Dawn Approach didn't settle whatsoever and turning for home was cooked. But it was Ryan Moore on Ruler Of The World who came from the back to land the 2013 Epsom Derby, and Ryan's second after Workforce. The Elaine Burke 'trained' Libertarian finished with a strong late run to grab second right on top of the line.
Ride of the day had to go to the Derby winning jockey Ryan Moore, but not for his Derby Winning ride, instead his ride on Duke Of Firenze who won the sprint. A furlong out he was one of the most unlikely winners with a lot to do and a wall of horses to pass if he were to land victory. Moore thread the eye of a needle though and masterfully got his mount through to land the spoils as the public looked on in awe. A mention also has to go to Danny Tudhope as well who also flew home but from even further back and if it wasn't for Duke Of Firenze, he would have won nicely.
Before we go on I'd like to address a rather serious problem that caught the eye of the racing public this week. On Thursday evening Tipperary had a mixed meeting of flat and jumps, in the 8:20, a 2 mile handicap Hurdle, disaster struck. The much loved veteran Let Yourself Go lost his early prominent place and was pulled up before the 3rd hurdle. As the field carried on and left horse and rider out of view of the camera it appeared nothing was going on and all was ok. However as the field began to turn for home it was clear that something shocking and something that should never happen on a racecourse had occurred. Unfortunately short after being pulled up Shane Hassett dismounted and Let Yourself Go collapsed and lost his life.
The shocking thing was still to come, as the rest of the field turned for home you could see the deceased horse still on the ground, uncovered with no covers around. He was left exposed laying on the track and if it wasn't for the quick thinking of the other riders he'd have been trampled. The only thing the ground staff appeared to do was to have two people wave flags to go round the hurdle, but they were hard to view. As the field carried on those two gentlemen ran out onto the course, one in front of Let Yourself Go, almost to protect him without a moments thought.
My problem came the day after when Tipperary Racecourse released a statement, in it they said, 'It was not possible to erect screens in the very short space of time available as it would have compromised the safety of the oncoming runners, riders and members of staff required to hold the screens'. This is where I have my problem, leaving the horse directly in front of the hurdle just off the bend still endangered the riders and horses. I appreciate they cant do anything about that, but if safety is paramount like it is at every course throughout the world, why not void the race? A prime example is Fox Hunt at Meydan, he broke down on the home straight first time round, within the minute the race was declared void.
When a race is declared void, the runners are flagged down and ordered to stop and pull their horses up as quick as possible. Unfortunately for owners, trainer and rider the race is not completed and they may feel it was a wasted opportunity for their horse. But after all the one thing all trainers want is their horse back safely and for them to come home for dinner that evening. I'd just like to know the reasons for not voiding the race and I'm sure many others will join me in this.

2:20 Newmarket - Nabucco

On paper that is fairly poor form and you'd be scoffed at for suggesting a reversal of this measure. But its only when you review the race footage that you discover he was unlucky and short of room twice in the last two furlongs. Once when making his move and again when the race had gone but would have probably been third ahead of Red Jazz. Pastoral Player is also one that usually takes a couple of runs before he hits peak fitness so today he should be at his best. Libranno is no worry on last years form and Pastoral Player can land this race for the second time in as many years. Graham Lee in the saddle today. (11/4)

Gary Moore's gelding is one that I have been fond of ever since his debut romp at Southwell under George Baker. But as of today he still hasn't quite gone on to be the horse that was thought of him as a two year old but is still full of promise. His only defeat as a two year old came at Goodwood, but that run is easily forgiven as he absolutely hated the track and stood no chance. But this year he is winless from two attempts but slight excuses can be made for both of them efforts. First time up this season he ran at Newmarket over 6 furlongs but that trip proved to be a bit beyond him at this stage of his career, yet still ran with credit. Last time out he tried to defy top weight in a good sprint handicap at York, to be fair to him he looked good passing the 2 furlong marker before emptying out. It is also worth noting that he was on the wrong side of the course that day with the main finishers coming down the near side. Out of stall 2 today and a possibly lenient handicap mark he can have no excuses but must break well, something that shouldn't be a problem based on his previous efforts. Dutch Masterpiece to take all the beating for Jimmy Fortune. (4/1)

We will side with Elhaame to end our day on a high note this week for Luca Cumani and Kieren Fallon. This is only a small contest but is a tough race to decide as there are a couple of potential improvers in this 4 horse field, Elhaame being one of them. The son of acclamation has got better the further he again steps up an extra 2 furlongs today which definitely looks a good move. Last time you can say in a sense he was a tad unfortunate as he bumped into a horse now rated 14 pounds higher than when winning that race. In turn Elhaame was a length and a quarter ahead of the third place horse but stayed on well to the line after being outpaced at the top of the straight. Not a big race but a competitive one to round off the day and it can go the way of Elhaame. (9/4)

As everyone knows last week was the Epsom Derby and it was expected to be contested between Ballydoyle and Dawn Approach from Godolphin. It is fair to say that Dawn Approach was oh so disappointing and the writing was on the wall a long way from home. With Joseph O'Brien setting a slow pace on Battle Of Marengo, Dawn Approach didn't settle whatsoever and turning for home was cooked. But it was Ryan Moore on Ruler Of The World who came from the back to land the 2013 Epsom Derby, and Ryan's second after Workforce. The Elaine Burke 'trained' Libertarian finished with a strong late run to grab second right on top of the line.
Ride of the day had to go to the Derby winning jockey Ryan Moore, but not for his Derby Winning ride, instead his ride on Duke Of Firenze who won the sprint. A furlong out he was one of the most unlikely winners with a lot to do and a wall of horses to pass if he were to land victory. Moore thread the eye of a needle though and masterfully got his mount through to land the spoils as the public looked on in awe. A mention also has to go to Danny Tudhope as well who also flew home but from even further back and if it wasn't for Duke Of Firenze, he would have won nicely.
Before we go on I'd like to address a rather serious problem that caught the eye of the racing public this week. On Thursday evening Tipperary had a mixed meeting of flat and jumps, in the 8:20, a 2 mile handicap Hurdle, disaster struck. The much loved veteran Let Yourself Go lost his early prominent place and was pulled up before the 3rd hurdle. As the field carried on and left horse and rider out of view of the camera it appeared nothing was going on and all was ok. However as the field began to turn for home it was clear that something shocking and something that should never happen on a racecourse had occurred. Unfortunately short after being pulled up Shane Hassett dismounted and Let Yourself Go collapsed and lost his life.
The shocking thing was still to come, as the rest of the field turned for home you could see the deceased horse still on the ground, uncovered with no covers around. He was left exposed laying on the track and if it wasn't for the quick thinking of the other riders he'd have been trampled. The only thing the ground staff appeared to do was to have two people wave flags to go round the hurdle, but they were hard to view. As the field carried on those two gentlemen ran out onto the course, one in front of Let Yourself Go, almost to protect him without a moments thought.
My problem came the day after when Tipperary Racecourse released a statement, in it they said, 'It was not possible to erect screens in the very short space of time available as it would have compromised the safety of the oncoming runners, riders and members of staff required to hold the screens'. This is where I have my problem, leaving the horse directly in front of the hurdle just off the bend still endangered the riders and horses. I appreciate they cant do anything about that, but if safety is paramount like it is at every course throughout the world, why not void the race? Friday 7th June
Happy Friday everyone! I hear the weather has been wonderful back in England, for once I don't use that phrase sarcastically. Two things to address first, yes I am aware it is Friday and not Saturday I will explain why there is a blog up in a minute. Secondly I would like to reassure everyone that the Interview and article with Kirsty Milczarek is happening, I am waiting for the seal of approval right now. Hopefully it will either be up today or failing that it will go up on Sunday.

Now very quickly onto the racing!
4:20 Newmarket - Chesterfield
This son of Pivotal really impressed me on debut when winning a 7 furlong maiden on the July Course, which is again in use for the first time this season. From just outside the four furlong marker Mickael Barzalona who again takes the ride today, was pushing away and victory looked unlikely. But his nudging and cajoling paid off around the one furlong marker, as Chesterfield found a gap and picked up well to score by a comfortable 1 and three quarter lengths. That is the reason for the obvious step up in trip to a mile and two furlongs which he should stay well. We cant be certain how strong that maiden is but every horse that has run since has won soon after. The nagging doubt is his race fitness as he hasn't been seen since that race which was 349 days ago. However, Saeed Bin Suroor's horses have been going well on their returns this year, so through gritted teeth I am willing to say its ok. One last mention is todays pilot, Mickael Barzalona rides Newmarket exceptionally well, especially the July course in particular. This is a huge positive and in a very competitive handicap Chesterfield can retain is 100% record. (7/1)
8:05 Pontefract - Duke Of Perth
Kieren Fallon makes the 146 mile trip from Newmarket to ride Duke Of Perth which is his 'banker of the week'. Last time out was his first attempt in a handicap and had to be noted down as an unlucky runner up when held in around the two furlong marker. The long and short of it is that Isis Blue (the winner) got first run in a race that didn't break any track records. Around a furlong and a half out Duke Of Perth finally got a run and began to stay on for second, this was under hands and heels also. Definitely one that looks a 'winner in waiting' and today should be that day, if not for our sake for Mr Fallon who will be using a fair bit of petrol. (2/1)

David Marnane is no stranger to these shores as he regularly brings one or two over which demand a lot of respect. Nocturnal Affair makes the trip to Haydock alone tonight and looks to hold a very good chance on paper. His only start this season came at The Curragh when beaten 3 lengths in to 7th by Hitchens, there are plenty of excuses however. The main one being that he broke very leisurely and was carried left leaving him always playing catch up with the field and never got competitive. Though he managed to stay on for 7th he didn't have the toughest of races and should be 100% fit after his reappearance. One for Ireland with Nocturnal Affair here. (7/1)

Salsify needs no introduction here as last years winner of the race and dual Cheltenham Fox Hunters winner. Since the turn of the year Salsify has been unbeaten, recording a win at Leopardstown in February before Cheltenham glory. As we all know he was a tad fortunate at the Festival with Oscar Delta unshipping Jane Mangan on the run in when in control. He then showed he is every bit as good as ever when absolutely hacking up at Punchestown by 35 lengths to Oscar Delta. Bare in mind that those three wins came on ground that is probably a bit too testing for him and it makes for impressive reading. With todays Good summer jumping ground he can once again prove why he dominates this division of chasing. (5/4)

Epsom Investec Derby Day
Good morning everyone, I trust you are well rested and ready for Derby Day, the day we find out if Dawn Approach can follow in the footsteps of his father. Personally I think he will stay perfectly fine and it will take a seriously good horse to beat him here today, saying that, the field is full of them. Chopin bids to become the first ever German winner but will also be the first ever German starter in the Epsom Derby in the 255 year history of the race.
I must apologise for the lateness of this blog as I have just come in from a concert at the Vogue Theatre. At 7:30 yesterday morning I woke up and logged on to twitter before work and found a competition for tickets. So I though why not and entered it, upon arrival at work I was sent a message that I had won two tickets to see Eli Young Band, a well known country band in these neck of the woods. To put it plainly they were awesome, as are most country music concerts, even if you aren't a country fan I fully recommend going to a show. They aren't all rednecks!!
Back to racing though, yesterday we had just the one winner with Gregorian for William Buick and John Gosden. However it was made nicer the fact that it was also our NAP, we also had a few places but it wasn't much to write home about. Today promises to be a tad better however, it is worth noting that Andrew Tinkler travels to Hexham for one ride (Hi Candy, 4:20). Mickael Barzalona also travels to Newcastle for one ride (Inaad, 7:10), I don't recall seeing either of them at them respective tracks ever.

1:35 Epsom Downs - High Troja
Ed Dunlop's colt has been ultra consistent since the start of his career, with a worst placed 5th on debut which was 7 starts ago. He won last time out at Newbury, on that occasion beating Ryan Moore's mount but today he is in the saddle. Those two were clear of the third placed horse and after quickening in nice style High Troja went on to secure a half a length victory. Obviously there is the unknown quantity of if he will handle the Epsom course, but he does have his preferred ground which is a positive. In fact he has improved alot since switching to the turf from the all weather which he ran on debut and then on heavy the next two times. The strongest piece of form for High Troja was when he ran 2nd behind Mutashaded who on his second outing won a good handicap at Sandown. Raised six pounds for his last win, but that may not be enough to stop him here and the vote goes to High Troja for Ryan Moore. (9/2)
2:05 Epsom Downs - Riverboat Springs
Riverboat Springs impressed me greatly on debut at Bath as he ran green and was outpaced early on in the race. Despite that Martin Harley managed to nurse him to the front and ended up winning very easily with the reopposing Money Team back in second. Typically Mick Channon's 2 year Old's improve for their first run so it is always a bonus when they win first time up, especially in the manner of Riverboat Springs. Despite it being a competitive race the step up to 6 furlongs will most definitely suit and the jockey booking of William Buick catches the eye. Riverboat Springs can make it 2 from 2. (11/2)
2:40 Epsom Downs - St Nicholas Abbey
The Coronation Cup has become somewhat a Ballydoyle appreciation race over the years with Aidan O'Brien winning this 6 times of the last 8 running's. St Nicholas Abbey has won this the last two years as well and is clearly the one to beat after winning over in Dubai. Joseph O'Brien takes the ride again this year as a prep ready for Battle Of Marengo later on in the Derby, but to be honest it shouldn't matter who is on board. Dunaden looks the only real danger and if this were over 2 miles he'd be a certainty but they persist with this trip which is all wrong for him. It gives me no sense of pride to go for an odds on favourite but he seems fairly bullet proof, especially in this field. St Nicholas Abbey can today go one better than Warrsan by winning the race 3 consecutive times. (2/5)
3:15 Epsom Downs - Swiss Cross
Racheal Kneller put this horse up as one to follow for the year in my interview with her but he hasn't had much luck in running. She didn't have much luck herself last time as she was meant to ride but got a flat tyre on the way to the track, Paul Hanagan replaced her. Since the turn of the year he has dropped 14 pounds and is just beginning to refind some of his earlier form off a mark of 89. The job is made that much easier today with Racheal Kneller taking 5 pounds off his back and he must have a huge chance. As always the Epsom Dash is an ultra competitive race but its very hard to look away from a well handicapped horse. Swiss Cross to return at a nice price for punters. (22/1)
4:00 Epsom Downs - Dawn Approach
Like earlier it gives me no satisfaction to tip a horse who is such a short price, but Dawn Approach was so awesome in the Guineas. The main argument has been about his staying power but upon a second look at the Guineas he was a tad outpaced early on and stayed well. So his stamina isn't a great worry for me and with the challengers not looking in the same league he is a good enough price. Ballydoyle haven't really got a really strong contender this year and the main challengers may be French raider Ocovango and German raider Chopin. Jim Bolger's colt still looks much the better however and a stand out amongst three year old this season, much like Camelot last year. Dawn Approach can make it 8 from 8 here today and win the second leg of the Triple Crown. (7/4)
4:50 Epsom Downs - Cayuga
Cayuga didn't get the clearest of runs at all last time under Willie Twiston Davies but after being short of room late on he once again rallied to grab second. That was his first run since coming back from a break and definitely ran with credit posting a much improved effort. Even is comeback run is hard to knock behind the progressive Duke Of Clarence for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes. You can completely see the reasoning behind stepping him up an extra 2 furlongs to tackle a mile and a half, a trip he was unsuccessful on the all weather at Lingfield. There are no doubts about his handicap mark as Robert Tart claims 5 pounds as did Willie Twiston Davies last time, and runs off exactly the same mark. Cayuga can find the needed improvement and this son of Montjeu can grab his second career win. (17/2)
5:25 Epsom Downs - Blue Jack
There is absolutely nothing exposed about Blue Jack as he is an 8 year old but he just sneaks in at the bottom of the handicap here. Earlier this year he broke his 3 year losing streak and has been running himself into form as of late but struggled over 5 furlongs last time. His 6 furlong form though is very good and although now a little higher in the handicap ran a good enough race at Newmarket on his last outing. He was fancied that day but it is clear that 6 furlongs will be his trip as he was being pushed along from an early stage and stayed on late. Once rated 110 Blue Jack isn't the force of old but this season has shown he retains plenty of ability, despite only one of his nine wins coming over 6 furlongs he can go close here. Blue Shark to close up the Derby meeting. (16/1)
It is also worth noting that one of our horses to follow runs at Worcester today after Gregorian obliged for us yesterday. Ambion Wood has had a troubled campaign but has had a little break and a breathing operation, lets hope he can fulfill the talent we were promised.

However it was made nicer the fact that it was also our NAP, we also had a few places but it wasn't much to write home about. Today promises to be a tad better however, it is worth noting that Andrew Tinkler travels to Hexham for one ride (Hi Candy, 4:20). Mickael Barzalona also travels to Newcastle for one ride (Inaad, 7:10), I don't recall seeing either of them at them respective tracks ever.

1:35 Epsom Downs - High Troja
Ed Dunlop's colt has been ultra consistent since the start of his career, with a worst placed 5th on debut which was 7 starts ago. He won last time out at Newbury, on that occasion beating Ryan Moore's mount but today he is in the saddle. Those two were clear of the third placed horse and after quickening in nice style High Troja went on to secure a half a length victory. Obviously there is the unknown quantity of if he will handle the Epsom course, but he does have his preferred ground which is a positive. In fact he has improved alot since switching to the turf from the all weather which he ran on debut and then on heavy the next two times. The strongest piece of form for High Troja was when he ran 2nd behind Mutashaded who on his second outing won a good handicap at Sandown. Raised six pounds for his last win, but that may not be enough to stop him here and the vote goes to High Troja for Ryan Moore. (9/2)
2:05 Epsom Downs - Riverboat Springs
Riverboat Springs impressed me greatly on debut at Bath as he ran green and was outpaced early on in the race. Despite that Martin Harley managed to nurse him to the front and ended up winning very easily with the reopposing Money Team back in second. Typically Mick Channon's 2 year Old's improve for their first run so it is always a bonus when they win first time up, especially in the manner of Riverboat Springs. Despite it being a competitive race the step up to 6 furlongs will most definitely suit and the jockey booking of William Buick catches the eye. Riverboat Springs can make it 2 from 2. (11/2)
2:40 Epsom Downs - St Nicholas Abbey
The Coronation Cup has become somewhat a Ballydoyle appreciation race over the years with Aidan O'Brien winning this 6 times of the last 8 running's. St Nicholas Abbey has won this the last two years as well and is clearly the one to beat after winning over in Dubai. Joseph O'Brien takes the ride again this year as a prep ready for Battle Of Marengo later on in the Derby, but to be honest it shouldn't matter who is on board. Dunaden looks the only real danger and if this were over 2 miles he'd be a certainty but they persist with this trip which is all wrong for him. It gives me no sense of pride to go for an odds on favourite but he seems fairly bullet proof, especially in this field. St Nicholas Abbey can today go one better than Warrsan by winning the race 3 consecutive times. (2/5)
3:15 Epsom Downs - Swiss Cross
Racheal Kneller put this horse up as one to follow for the year in my interview with her but he hasn't had much luck in running. She didn't have much luck herself last time as she was meant to ride but got a flat tyre on the way to the track, Paul Hanagan replaced her. Since the turn of the year he has dropped 14 pounds and is just beginning to refind some of his earlier form off a mark of 89. The job is made that much easier today with Racheal Kneller taking 5 pounds off his back and he must have a huge chance. As always the Epsom Dash is an ultra competitive race but its very hard to look away from a well handicapped horse. Swiss Cross to return at a nice price for punters. (22/1)
4:00 Epsom Downs - Dawn Approach
Like earlier it gives me no satisfaction to tip a horse who is such a short price, but Dawn Approach was so awesome in the Guineas. The main argument has been about his staying power but upon a second look at the Guineas he was a tad outpaced early on and stayed well. So his stamina isn't a great worry for me and with the challengers not looking in the same league he is a good enough price. Ballydoyle haven't really got a really strong contender this year and the main challengers may be French raider Ocovango and German raider Chopin. Jim Bolger's colt still looks much the better however and a stand out amongst three year old this season, much like Camelot last year. Dawn Approach can make it 8 from 8 here today and win the second leg of the Triple Crown. (7/4)
4:50 Epsom Downs - Cayuga
Cayuga didn't get the clearest of runs at all last time under Willie Twiston Davies but after being short of room late on he once again rallied to grab second. That was his first run since coming back from a break and definitely ran with credit posting a much improved effort. Even is comeback run is hard to knock behind the progressive Duke Of Clarence for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes. You can completely see the reasoning behind stepping him up an extra 2 furlongs to tackle a mile and a half, a trip he was unsuccessful on the all weather at Lingfield. There are no doubts about his handicap mark as Robert Tart claims 5 pounds as did Willie Twiston Davies last time, and runs off exactly the same mark. Cayuga can find the needed improvement and this son of Montjeu can grab his second career win. (17/2)
5:25 Epsom Downs - Blue Jack
There is absolutely nothing exposed about Blue Jack as he is an 8 year old but he just sneaks in at the bottom of the handicap here. Earlier this year he broke his 3 year losing streak and has been running himself into form as of late but struggled over 5 furlongs last time. His 6 furlong form though is very good and although now a little higher in the handicap ran a good enough race at Newmarket on his last outing. He was fancied that day but it is clear that 6 furlongs will be his trip as he was being pushed along from an early stage and stayed on late. Once rated 110 Blue Jack isn't the force of old but this season has shown he retains plenty of ability, despite only one of his nine wins coming over 6 furlongs he can go close here. Blue Shark to close up the Derby meeting. (16/1)
It is also worth noting that one of our horses to follow runs at Worcester today after Gregorian obliged for us yesterday. Ambion Wood has had a troubled campaign but has had a little break and a breathing operation, lets hope he can fulfill the talent we were promised.

NAP and Nb done on betting perspectives this week as I didn't want to put a really short priced favourite as one of them. Swiss Cross would still be Next Best however.
